24mm Finest Golden Nib in Custom handle by BullsEye (Mark Breinen) arrives

Well, the excitement of my 28mm brush didn't even get a chance to wear off before my 24mm arrived.

These two make the perfect pair. Other than both being beautiful natural wood handles and very soft, there isn't much they share.

The story behind the 24mm is this. I PM'ed Bullseye to get an idea of how much it would cost to make me a handle for a Golden Nib knot. He responded with an offer to make the brush custom with whatever knot I wanted seated and ready to use for a very reasonable price, and I took him up on it. I had already ordered the 28mm, but I'd been warned that it was huge (I don't listen well... it's absurdly huge, but I wub my ridiculous brush), so I figured that a 24mm (the top side of "typical" size as I was told) would be a very good choice for a mate.

I really didn't have too many specifics for what I wanted. I told Mark that it needed to reach the bottom of my ~3.75" deep scuttle without me having to stick my fingers inside it to lather, that I wanted it to stand on end, and that I wanted it in natural wood. And I decided on the 24mm Finest knot. He asked me a few questions. Where I gripped my brush, a general idea of what sort of shape I wanted, if I wanted some extra backbone from a pinch on the knot by the handle, and as he was finishing it up if I'd like a little weight in there to make it feel a bit more substantial. These last two questions that I hadn't even considered worked out fantastically. The weight and extra spine make this brush feel and lather the best of any I've used. And the extremely full (and barely bloomed) knot makes for an extremely soft, but sturdy brush that works amazingly well with soaps, but feels as soft as my 28mm Silvertip on my face (less of a tickle, more of a rub, but no prickle or poke at all).

As for the lather.

Well.

This is current Williams. No special treatment. ~30 seconds of lathering.

I don't really know what to add to that. It wasn't quite as easy as Tabac, but it was damned close.

It will be a LONG time before I need another brush. But when I do, I expect I'll get a 26mm Silvertip done up identically to this brush. I'm already imagining what that would be like. I really can't express how happy I am with the pinching effect that Mark did for me.

Oh and forgot to mention. No shedding at all. So I'm assuming Mark even took the time to comb the knot for me.

That's a very nice piece of work. It looks like Mark sunk the knot fairly low. Did you specify or was that a design choice for a particular purpose? Regardless, the Williams didn't stand a chance. You have to post a pic when you lather up a soap that is absurdly easy. You may need a wetvac to clean up the sink. :001_rolle

I believe that is where the pinch happens. (He can correct me if I'm mistaken). I thought it could go either way when he showed me it the first time, but after my first use, I'm sold. The knot has such a crazy amount of backbone. It's firmer than my overstuffed (and prickly) boar, but still has the softness of the badger. So it lathers soaps well and feels great on my face.

This brush could get lather out of a stone. Just shaved with Kell's Original. First time I've gotten really good lather out of Kell's without lathering on the puck. 15 secs loading, maybe 1.5mins lathering.

Nice looking handle, must be very comfortable to hold.
Is this your only brush? if so, does it get a chance to dry until next day, packed as it is?

No, I have this, a 28mm Silvertip, a ~20mm? Rex that I thought was badger, but I'm beginning to suspect was just broken in boar dyed to look like badger (It was labeled as "pure"), a vintage boar English leather Brush, A VDH boar, a vintage "Fuller" pure badger (tiny maybe 16mm knot, not very full, no backbone at all). And then a couple vintage brushes I never used.

I currently use this one, the 28mm, and I'll probably keep using the 20mm Rex on occasion. That said, I shake my brushes out quite well. Boar seems to take a day or so to dry, but both this brush and my 28mm are bone dry a few hours after I finish shaving
