240 Grit Sandpaper

240 grit sandpaper kicks ***. It is happily the best sandpaper grit out there. I like 1200 quite a lot too, but 240 is better, and here's for why...

Earlier this evening I went to get out a knife that I knew needed sharpening, and was going to try out a new coticule:

Oh balls! That's some pretty bad rust that Sab's picked up. Let's try scrubbing it down with some bicarb:

It's got rid of the active rust, but still ain't looking good. Whatever will I do? I'll certainly need more than just a coticule for this job:

But Ho! What's this? A single sheet of 240 GRIT SANDPAPER!!!

About 2/3rds of it to remove the significant pitting on the blade:

And the rest wrapped around a bit of wood as a 'whetstone'. Take that coticule!

As if it hadn't done enough already, my piece of 240 grit sandpaper is also REVERSIBLE, for stropping:

So I think we can all agree... 240 grit sandpaper kicks ***:

🤔 Sweet Khyber Bowie... err, kitchen knife.

Mouse pad and sandpaper was a preferred method back in the day.

Ah I've never tried a mousepad backing actually, though I have seen it talked about as a possible method for sharpening knives, especially those with heavily convexed bevel geometry - someone on KKF suggested for Globals a while back, which have particularly weird grinds.

Dunno if I've got and mouse mats any more though... will have to check!
