What's new

24 today.need some mixed reviews!

So I'm am turning 24 today and may get myself a little present. I have a nice badger and a pretty good boar brush, but now I thinking I will split the difference and get a mixed knot brush.

I'm looking at:

SOC '12 SE
Vulfix 404 Grosvenor
Omega "Mixed Midget"
and possibly a Vie-Long horse/badger mix...

Thought and opinions please.:thumbup1:

I got moves like Jagger
There's a 404 on the BST. I haven't had one but it's on my list of ones to try down the road. I've had the Omega and it's a nice brush; small enough to make a great travel brush but make no mistake, this one can also deliver the goods at home too!

My only concern with the Omega is the size, not that it won't hold enough lather, but that it will just all around be too small to enjoy day to day. I have found the SOC for $50 but the is still pushing it on the price for me, so unless it is noticeably better it might be out of the running.

Omega is a fun little brush. The Handle is teeny tiny, the knot itself is just a bit small (it's pretty lofty). I definitely wouldn't use it as an everyday brush, but there's not really any $15 badger or badger mixed brushes I would.

I don't have any experience with the SOC or Horse/badgers, but they're the two that would interest me.

I'd take the omega over the grosvenor unless you are really worried about the size. I found the omega to be a better balanced and more fun brush to use, but again I can't see myself using it every day.

I am about to order that Semogue myself, the knot is intriguing and all yeah yeah yeah but that handle is seriously cool.

We share the same birthday, just 11 years difference. Happy Birthday!

The SOC is very scrubby with a little scritch that softens as it breaks in.
The Omega is a soft brush due to the longer loft with a bit more scritch that doesn't fully go away, just at my tolerance level (I can only stand light scritch).
I haven't tried the other two, but could easily recommend either of the above depending on if they match what you are looking for. In truth they are about as opposite from each other as possible other than the fact they both contain badger and boar in the knot.

I jumped on the SOC. The others may still arrive on my doorstep one of these days but finding the SOC for about 25 bucks cheaper than other sites convinced me. Still interested in the Vie-Longs if anyone has tried them.

Blzrfn happy birthday to you too then!

Thanks to all of you for the replies, feel free to keep them coming! Ill post my thoughts when the SOC gets here.

My SOC arrived yesterday, i haven't used it in a shave because i am going do a few days if defunk'n'break'in lathers. It had tge boar funk but not as badly as Omega and it is subsiding rapidly. We are going through a 105f weekend wgich means it is going through 2-3 dry cycles a day. This is the only thing i like about hot weather.
The handle is outstanding. It looks great and feels excellent in hand. The only other brush I have with such well thought handle is Da Vinci 293.
Semogue really made a winner with this handle design. I am thinking now to pick up the SOC in the other two hair types.
You are going to love it.
Oh, and belated happy birthday to both of you :)

Got the SOC, and also through the generosity of Tom (mftoms59) I also received two Vie-Longs, both BGS special editions, one in mix knot and one pure horse. All three are beautifully made brushes, though only the Vie-Longs have seen my face, through the test lathers all seem to be great performers!

On a side note i would just like to say that I am constantly impressed by the quality of the men on this forum, thanks to all of you for making these first few months of my new hobby not only enjoyable but rewarding in the conversations and discussions I've been able to have with some of you.

Congrats - the SOC is a great choice.

The only other mixed-hair brush I've had was a 404 - I piffed it to someone a while ago as I wasn't using it. It's a great brush for the price, but it seems to me to be mainly boar with not much badger in it - and it didn't really feel like anything more than a good boar.

But the SOC mixed is altogether different - it's my favourite brush.

I've had all of those brushes. I have a special place for the Omega Mighty Midget but it's a bit small. I'd go for the SOC 12 SE. The Vulfix Grosvenor has an amazing handle (similar to Simpsons) but it's rather rough.
