What's new

21st Century SE

Here's my interpretation of the 21st century SE razor.

Approx ten days ago I had the opportunity to purchase a nickel plated, GEM 1912 Patent Travel Razor. I questioned the short handle of the Travel, but it has proven not to be a problem. I put a GEM/Walgreens blade in it and started to receive the best shaves of my life. No nicks, weepers, only a little irritation, from me pressing the razor to hard the first two shaves. I had shave #7 yesterday. I got a BBS shave. The razor was dragging a little more, but the edge was still cutting cleanly.

I shaved this am (shave #8) and about a halfway through the shave I noted the edge went away. I guess I pushed the blade to far. I finished shaving, with only two passes. I decided to forgo the third pass. An OK shave, but no BBS and a little more irritation when I applied the alum block. I think I am going to stick with 6 shaves with the GEM blade. I have about 8 blades left in the dispencer after replacing the dull blade. I recently placed a large order of the Ted Pella, stainless, coated (#121-3) blades. Hopefully I will get them in this week sometime. I guess I am turning into a GEMocrat.

Wouldn't it be great if they started making a modern, all stainless copy of the 1912 patent razor, but with Cooncatbob's design, Mastiff handles.

I recall my father shaving during the mid 1950"s using a large, round, black handled, gold plated, GEM. It was his favorite razor. Five or six years later, it got knocked off the mirror shelf and the handle broke. He could not find another similar razor. He purchased several more GEM razors, but he always complained that they did not shave as well. He later switched to the TRAC two razors. He continued wet shaving with a brush and Williams soap until he passed away in 1982

I recently learned that he had been using a GEM Junior, with the round bakelite handle. I am not sure of the official name of that model. I think he threw away the broken razor. I wish I had the 1912 head. I would have made a new handle so I could use it.

I won a bid on a, as new condition, GEM, 1912 patent, Junior, gold plated razor. It is in such beautifull condition I have not used it yet. I have been getting such great shaves with the Travel, I didn't need to.
