2025 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Battlestar Galactica Year

Is it swell time?
My question, then, is this a disqualifying event?
No it’s not. Friendly conversations and conversational exchanges leading to a third party by their volition gifting you something to support the hobby.
I find that portion of the rules hazy
Well the hazy part might be the hinting, but other than that getting gifts in my view is pretty straight forward: lovely additions to be enjoyed. And let us know how they are! I will be in Paris shortly so I might get them first hand.
I didn't ask for them, nor did I expect them, so it isn't a solicited gift.
See above. I tend to gift people shaving things irrespective of them being in restraint or not. They don’t ask me, they don’t hint, but I like doing it based on what I read and know about the person. It’s the B&B spirit as far as I am concerned.
is this considered a swap?
Nope - swaps should in addition go through BST, but that’s between members obviously.

So long story short: enjoy your gifts, still in and kudos for passing on the enjoyment to your son, Bill!

Cheers,

Guido

My son was visiting a couple of weeks ago, and, as is typical, our conversations drifted from work to family to dogs to shooting to shaving.

I got him a Carbon Cx-904L last year, but, he forgot to pack it when he came. He asked if I had a razor (seriously, do I have a razor? Me?) he could borrow. In a momentary mental break, I fetched him my Carbon Cx-Ti. He immediately fell in love, agreeing with my assessment that the extra weight of the 904 is not always a good thing.

He used it three consecutive days and I could see the look of longing in his eyes when he handed it back to me. So, I surreptitiously packed it in the case with the stand and gave it to his wife to hand off when they got home.

During the course of conversation, we discussed soap and my love for MdC. He tried my Fougere, Vetyver, and Original (wasn't a fan of the smell of Agrumes in the jar). I mentioned that there were two new flavors not yet available, but that I would likely buy them next year. He said he was going to have to get Original and Fougere for himself, which made me really happy... my 36-year old son, still learning things from Dad.

Long story short... in yesterday's post, I found jars of both Magellan and Absinthe. He ordered his two, plus these two, direct from MdC. When I called him, he said it was a "thank you" for the razor.

My question, then, is this a disqualifying event? I find that portion of the rules hazy... is this considered a swap? I didn't ask for them, nor did I expect them, so it isn't a solicited gift. And, I didn't spend any money (technically, given the price of the razor, I lost $400).

If this is a disqualifying event it was well worth it to introduce him to MdC (and titanium razors) and I fully understand. I await your ruling, gentlemen.
I have no judicial power here but I do want to say that it is a very wholesome story and I don't think this against the rules. As isn't a swap or asked for, it is a thank you gift from your son.

But as I said I hold no power here for I am not Gandalf the Grey not the white and can not aid you here!
I'm Frederik the Black with some salt in the pepper and I can only wish you many more happy days with your son.

SOTD with the second MdC Paris temptress, greetings from the 2025 Gruyere sin bin….

Switched over to the Fatip slant for shave no. 18 with the Dorco. I almost binned it after 17 shaves with the Merkur 34C but with the FCCS, I would say this blade has some life left in it. Interesting how a dull blade for one razor works better in another.
This mirrors my experience with Fatip (albeit their open comb variants). A blade that may be flagging in one razor tends to spring back to life in a Fatip.

Not a judge but this is clearly unsolicited, so I don't see why it should be disqualifying :)

Shave 19 with the Dorco. Definitely have a few more shaves with it. However, there was a slight tugging at the chin and a little sting with the alum but nothing unusual. And the shave is longer lasting than it was with the Merkur 34C. Think I will stay with the FCCS for another month or two. Now, my alum block is getting small. The TOBS is excellent for glide, (but not the scent.)

Question: are our exceptions "locked in"?

I know I already changed my mind once, but I have decided the most sensible route would be to keep my options open entirely.

There are a couple of items I have been weighing up. Either of them would eventually make a suitable "Birthday gift to self" but don't want to end up being restricted to the one I am less excited about simply because of what I nominated as my exception 6 months earlier.

Otherwise, I might end up having to declare myself out, even if I only buy one thing.

I was under the impression that the exception was "locked-in" before departure, which is why I had to be more specific with my original exception (which was at first a "bowl-or-aftershave" request, and became just the bowl).

I assume our fleet admiral can give a more precise answer.

I just went back to the rules and I think you might be right - so be it.

As far as I am concerned. I will feel like I succeeded if I only buy one thing in 2025...but rules is rules. I will still hold on for as long as I can.

Yes, the exceptions are locked in after 15 January - the end of the restock period.

As for the buying James, you will succeed at this! According to Galactica’s Intelligence Service you have recently purchased some very fine razors and they spotted plenty of brushes already present at Goblin Castle. There is a loophole should you run the risk of being succumbed to temptations and that is to simply ask the group! We can use BST to arrange exchanges, swaps, trades. We can also organise passarounds among the crew (I would need to check general B&B guidelines for that one, but I think we should be ok). There is more than one way to cross the finish line. I mean even last year someone went out buying a Rocca to which another crew member mentioned that had he known he would have gladly gifted his Rocca to said brother.

First joiners to GRUYÈRE go through this phase of sorting out exceptions and not being convinced about their exceptions once chosen. So it is completely normal. What’s on your mind if I may ask?
