I don't subscribe to any shaving news letters, it's right here on B&B among you fine gentleman is where I get in the most trouble!

A delayed Merry Christmas to the wonderful B&B brethren.

A few days ago to take out a tube of post shave balm to gift my nephew I opened my cupboard of shame, the place where my all shaving items which aren't in current use go to be stored (which is everything aside from a razor, a brush, and one soap as right now I have a beard), and even though I have a number of brushes, soaps, splashes and so on, the amount of unused items I have startled me.

And with that, it's probably a good thing to refrain from buying anything for a calendar year.

I have a few things on order, items I ordered from the Aliexpress 11/11 sale and some blades I ordered a few weeks ago but with Royal Mail being so incredibly slow they maybe delivered in 2022!

Nonetheless, I am in for 2021 with no exception.

I think since I am playing the role of annoying opposition I should remind folks that there are several long running threads in almost every one of the sub forums with the word acquisitions in the title. The threads under the "everything else" umbrella will be unlikely to cause you to go out but might cost you some money. But other sections will show you all the cool shiny stuff that people have managed to acquire. A personal favorite of mine is looking at the pictures of the latest straight razor score.

Paraphrasing the dark one: Give in to the dark side, we have cookies!

@Heron has a good point. For the past six or seven years, the goal of the yearly sabbatical was simply not to spend any money on yourself for shaving stuff. PIFs were allowed, because they did not require spending any money.

According to the new puritanical rule, you could not even participate in a blade challenge, because it would be "soliciting a gift" to receive free blades in exchange for your evaluation and review. The new rule is a redefinition of "restraint" and sucks some of the joy out of participating.

Somebody decided from on high to impose this new rule about PIFs. Why has there been no discussion about this change in the rules? I don't remember anyone asking for it.

Much (planned) shopping was done here in 2020, with only one thing I didn't finalise. So I have a comfortable stock of most things, and a somewhat vague exception.

I still need some form of klutz proof soap dish/bowl/scuttle. I did get myself a pewter shaving soap dish this year, which I can either use for mug type soaps, or for the small sample sized portions of tub soaps that I serve up for variety, but still need something for the other. Depending what I find, it could be a lidded bowl, metal traditional scuttle, or some other suitable solution to the problem.

As I'm not entirely sure what form it may take, I'll just call the exemption "a soap container".

Last year started with much disagreement over fine points of what is considered shaving supplies and what is not. What will put you out or not. The rules were tightened to avoid such situations.
I am sorry that you feel that way.

Precedent was there for the past six years or so. The new rule is unnecessary. So, why then was it added?

"It was decided" is not an answer. It is the avoidance of an answer. This is a maneuver by legislative fiat by someone who lost this argument during the 2020 sabbatical. So, they have decided to impose their will on everyone else through underhanded, political means. This is probably due to fear of losing control from one of the "leadership team".

Running another sabbatical is pointless, IMHO; The idea is to do this with a group. I will have to refuse to participate when I would have liked to participate.

While the exception idea is a good one, I would like us to just carry on with the same definition of restraint from previous years, which is: not spending money on shaving items for yourself. I'm pretty confident that is what sabbatical means to most people.
