2019 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Maltese Falcon Razor

After using the gear I have for the year so far, I think I will utilize the restock window for one purpose. I have decided that I very much prefer boars and synths over badger. My badger just doesn't seem to produce the lather I like from any of my soaps, ie: Williams, Arko, Col. Conk and all of the TASS ( The Artisan Soap Shop) soaps I have. My boar and synths produce perfect lather, easily each and every time. I will probably give it to my son to use with the CO Bigelow that he has taken over from my stash and buy another Omega 10098 Pro boar for my rotation. I definitely will not need anything else for awhile. That one purchase should get me through the entire next year with no exception again.

October 28th Operative No. 59 Whisky - OUT (unplanned Mach 3 purchase)

Operative Whisky kept a careful eye on the back of the well dressed figure further along the sidewalk. He had been tailing Alexander "Slim" Gillette for a couple of days with no new information discovered. He felt confident that Slim was unaware of his being watched. This morning he had a feeling that today would be the day, Slim would lead him to something worthwhile to report. Earlier he watched as Slim stopped by a display outside of a large bookstore, then entered the store. When he too came up to the display he saw that it mentioned travel at super speeds, following inside he saw a crowded gaggle of people, apparently clambering to buy a ticket for a demonstration of the new invention. It took some time but he worked his way through, keeping his hat low to avoid Slim. In time he also had a ticket for the afternoon demonstration. Now he was following Slim to the train to get to the demonstration area just outside of town.

The train was full, and operative Whisky just managed to get a seat. Luckily Slim was tall, and he could still spot the back of his fancy coat several rows in front of him. The train car was abuzz with conversation about this new invention. From the snippets he heard it sounded like a small rail car sitting on a series of magnets. Initially there would be some special force to propel it, but then these magnets would accelerate the rail car to unknown speed. He chuckled as he overheard someone say it would be faster than sound. It took the train some time before they reached their stop at the station. Once they had disembarked they gathered by the street where a couple of for-hire buses took them to their final destination. Sitting on the bus operative Whisky began to ponder why Slim was going to see this crazy sounding invention. Did the Fatman and his henchmen plan on using it for smuggling or some other nefarious plot, perhaps they would steal it and sell it to our enemies, or sabotage it. He decided to stick to Slim like glue.

When the buses arrived, they quickly got out. Everyone was in an excited state, and were milling about until a voice over a loudspeaker silenced them. "Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the future of travel. With this rail car you will be able to cross this great country in a matter of a few hours." A low murmur ran through the crowd. "Yes, yes I know it sounds fantastic, but it is true. You will see it today. Perhaps a few of you will ride on it and get to experience travel faster than sound." "Ah hooey, your just putting us on" a low voice called out, followed by a few chuckles. "Now now, don't be so harsh. Come over and see for yourselves." With that the figure in a lab-coat motioned the crowd to follow him to a large low building. Upon entering they saw tubular rail cars with doors open, the front car had a pointed nose, and the back car had what looked like a series of large pipes or barrels around the top and sides. The whole works sat on two rails, placed narrowly together. The tracks led out a side door and disappeared into the distance. "Here is the rail car of the future. Comfort and luxury inside, science on the outside." He pointed out a series of regularly placed "lumps or boxes" running along the track, about six feet apart. "Those are the special magnets, and those," pointing to the pipes or barrels, "are the new engines. I call them mach engines. They, working in conjunction with the magnets will take this train above the speed of sound." More laughter and muttering could be heard.

Operative Whisky had become caught up in the moment and, he had to admit, was a bit enthralled at the concept. He almost forgot about Slim. Now the speaker was talking about the engines, and the crowd gathered around the rear rail-car and a large control station with cables running to the engines. "At his control station I can start up the engines and energize the magnets. The track goes for ten miles. Who will be on the first run?" He smiled and scanned the crowd. There was considerable talk going about, several pockets of people backed away as if fright. Then suddenly the well dressed figure of Slim loomed up in front of operative Whisky, a grim smile on his face. "Well well, if it isn't one of Spades lapdogs. And how is your case for O'Shaughnessy going? Have you any idea what she is really up to?" Operative Whisky just stared at him, not sure of what to say. "Come come, you must have some clue?" sneered Slim. "We know what we're doing. We will stop you and the Fatman." replied Whisky. Slim gave a grim laugh, "You are all without a clue. No idea what the figure really is." He stepped closer to Whisky, "You, Spade and the others have killed Leroy and Percy Gillette. For that all of you will die!" With lightening speed Slim reached out and grabbed Whisky. As they struggled, bumping into others a general brawl ensued. People were punching, kicking some got knocked out , others stumbled about the floor. The figure in the lab coat was horrified, "No! No!, Stop! you'll ruin everything." He tried to control the crowd, but he too was knocked back. He fell against the control station and slid across it, in the process moving several levers, buttons. Suddenly the sounds of the fight were overwhelmed by a rumble that built up to a roaring crescendo. Long tongues of flame were shooting out of the "mach engines" and the rail car was shaking. The magnets along the rails had begun a high pitched hum, and a faint glow could be seen.

Whisky and Slim had been fighting, and in their jostling with the crowd had fallen into the open car. Now they rolled on the plush carpeted floor, Whisky swung a right-hook just as Slim let fly an uppercut with his left. Both punches connected, and already bruised and bloodied the two combatants were momentarily knocked back; stunned. The rail-car was speeding along now, faster and faster. The noise was loud, and the train rocked as it sped up. Slim struggled to his feet, reaching into his jacket he drew out a silver plated automatic, "This is your end, fool!" Operative Whisky pushed back against a seat, and with effort made it to his feet. Looking out of the window at the landscape, he could not make it out, it was all a blur, "You idiot, we are on this crazy train rail-car thing! Look, you cannot make out the landscape we are going so fast" Slim paused as he looked over Whisky's shoulder and out of the window. A look of horror spread on his face, and he lowered the gun. They could feel a series of sharp bangs coming from the floor, as the train began to rock and buck violently. It got so bad they had to hold on with both hands. A feeling nausea swept over them, as there was one loud bang and a sharp jolt. Then it suddenly got quieter and the motion seemed smoother. The two leaned to look out of the windows, "Oh my God!" "Holy cow we must have flown off of the rails." "How can this thing land? We're dead!"

Next morning the streets were packed as everyone wanted to pick up the early edition to read up on what they had heard over the wireless. The headlines screamed; SABOTEURS TRY TO STEAL SUPERSPEED TRAIN. Reading the article Sam learned that there had been a fight at the building housing the train. Seems two men started it, one very well dressed and extremely thin. The inventor had been killed in a fire caused when the engines were started unplanned. The superspeed train had hurtled along the track faster and faster until it burst off the line at a curve. It flew for a long distance before crashing into a rock outcrop. The force was so great that the sections had crumpled into a small puck of twisted and burned metal. The remains of the saboteurs have not been identified. Several locals in the area reported hearing a loud boom or explosion sound as the thing flew past them. With a long sigh Sam laid the paper on his desk. He was sure it was Alexander "Slim" Gillette, and therefore the other must have been Whisky.

Ok I need a ruling. About a month ago I purchased a Karve Christopher Bradley in brass with a d plate. It was my exception so all good, BUT... I purchased a B plate because I found the D plate a bit too aggressive. This was a separate purchase, made after the fact, but part of my exception, I kind of feel like I’m out.

So I was somewhat expecting this, however, I saw the thread for the Bingle Buddy Gift exchange and must say... missing out on it is one of the saddest parts of joining the sabbatical to date. It was really fun last year for a lot more than receiving. That said, I am plugging along and enjoying the year. Had a brief moment when my wife asked me to buy her some body butter, shampoo bars, and bath soap from Stirling a few weeks ago. I had to sign on to my account and see all the things.... Made it through though.

Interesting point. If members agree we can add the Bingle Buddy gift exchange to the 2020 exception list.

So there has been a few hints and suggestions on a theme for next year.
Now the big question, is there anyone who would like to run the story next next?

I'd agree on the Bingle Buddy gift exchange if it was listed as the exception. Expect people to want to include other gift exchanges as long as it is the only exception.

I like the idea of allowing participants to have it as their one exception. It would allow people participate in a great B&B activity, not not let them receive a (potentially) shaving related gift and a shaving related exception.
