2019 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Maltese Falcon Razor

Peter, thanks for the tip. The maple is currently stickered in my unheated/uncooled garage/shop. I have pulled off some of the loose bark but will be a bit more diligent and yank off the rest of it. I know it is a few years out in terms of being able to do anything with the slabs... I pray that they will be lighter once they dry out a bit. The big ones took the forks on my tractor and two people to set the "other half" of the slab on the stack. I am not looking forward to the day where I need to the move thirty or so slabs to decide which one I want to use for what... I might need to stock up on some beer and bbq as a reward to give to a few friends that might be foolish enough to help me move them around.

I will probably make a couple practice pieces before I attempt the dining tables. SWMBO is already eying one of the smaller pieces to be an entry table/side board.

It’s been a pleasure gentlemen, I am out!

My captains choice bowl broke almost two months ago, after being used daily for over three years. The bowl has been sorely missed and I went ahead and bought the copper one today.

I never expected to make it this far, and had a lot of fun along the way, including downsizing my collection. Good luck to those left!

Wow, nice bowl (those pictures make it look better than the website)... I have had it in the cart a few times thinking I would replace my ceramic bowl that broke a few years ago. I didn't want to go out at the time so I grabbed a mismatched dish from the kitchen and have used that for several years. Even during the last couple restock periods I was tempted but for some reason a fit of frugalness hits me and I realize that my current little dish works fine.

Sigh, someday I will get one (I think)

I got a Captain's Choice bowl in the PIF for participating in the Restraint last year. Looks as though it would work just fine, but would easily make enough lather to shave the whole neighborhood at one go! I only face lather, but the bowl will work great to hold a puck or two -- or six! Imagine, shaving for a decade without refilling.....

Very good quality, Captain's Choice stuff is all good.

I will say I love my Captains copper bowl, but advise against leaving a puck in it. In the past I’d load 6-7 days worth of Cella into it from its small tub but after a few days it started to react with the copper and turn green. This was after the bowl was well loved and the varnish had worn off the inside. I plan to get a pottery version after the sabbatical to avoid this problem. It’s not an issue if I load the soap one day at a time and then rinse out. It’s a very nice bowl.

good to know

I managed to advance my efforts to kill some soaps by giving a couple to my brother. Last year I had given him an aluminum Colonial General SE and some Feather Proguards, and he liked them well enough to switch over from carts. I planned to see my brother during a recent trip to Florida, and decided to bring him some more goodies: a Yaqi synth brush, and tubs of A&E Greecian Urn and Stirling Arkadia. No reports yet on what he thinks.

On my side, I having been jumping around from soap to soap, resulting in no recent kills. I am enjoying myself, with no real urge to break the sabbatical. Quite the contrary, I have come to viscerally appreciate that I already have soap for years to come.

Razors are another story. I plan to pick up one of those fixed handle kamisori style Feather SS razors during the next restock window, then join next year's sabbatical.

I just (mostly) killed off a green Proraso this morning. I say mostly because the donut got to the point it was taking a while to lather, so I scooped out the small remaining amount and smashed it on top of another soap (the one I went out on). Anyway, I'm down to 7 soaps 3 aftershaves, 1 witch hazel, and I'm guessing under 150 blades. Still plenty to last out a couple of years without any significant purchases (if avoiding impulse buys).

The surprising thing to me recently is my favorite badger brush shed a bristly earlier this week, which it hasn't done in more than 5 years. Then it shed a second one this morning--hopefully these aren't signs of bad things to come for that brush.
