What's new

20 year old too mature for these?

greetings,
I went to a perfume shop at my local "suburb" mall (not mega mall but they have JCpennys and stuff) and the clerk there was 52ish year old guy who was the only salesmen in the most likely small 2-3 location family franchise store and he was the owner.

My list was just made entirely of the colognes I saw in a pretty popular thread on here about two weeks ago where people said their favorites.

The salesman pretty much agreed with every one of my inquires about these brands with the descriptions I read on here and was knowledgeable to exactly where they each were in the mid size storefront, the typical aisle on each side type. He also knew about pretty in depth about the history and notes about each one.

My list was comprised of

English leather likeness rating **** He said I was too young for this

Creed milliseme imperial*****************

L'eau D'issey ***** 72 dollars

Drakkar***

Jovan Musk*****

Azzaro Onyx*** I really like the original but this was was better than the new sport and chrome ones that just came out.

Creed Green Irish Tweed** sales man said this was his favorite I didn't like it too much and told him and it was at that point he told me I was too young for all of these because they are mature fragrances. He wasn't rude or anything about it.

He recommended for me

Versache pour homme I didn't really care for it it was too aqua-y

La Coste essential it was okay a fresh sweetish smell

Basically aqua sweet light fresh stuff.

Went to another store and checked out new Gavinchy PI I liked this one 4/5 and then the lady showed me DG the one I liked this one a lot it was really spicy!

I like musk and have never really cared for the above mentioned types but If i can't pull these off then it will save me time as some of them were really expensive and I don't want to waste money and time if it wouldn't work.

imho ignore what he said.

wear what you want, and forget that some are 'old man' scents. i wear tabac, jovan musk, floris vetiver, english leather etc and im 23.

if you like the smell, its a good one for you

yeah thats what I was thinking you guys are awesome by the way. Dennard you always respond to my posts so fast after I post them!

I am not husky, I am just tall and not physically active unless I am delivering pizzas in our 95 apartment complex 7 mile long delivery area. But i think I could pull of spicy woodsy cirtusy musks better than fresh or flowery

What would you guys recomend for a good one to try for a good buy (Under $55ish for 2 oz ish.

I've been in the market for some new scents lately. I've really liked sampling:

Dolce & Gabanna The One Gentleman - Peppery at first, finishes kind of woody/vanilla

CK Euphoria Intense - Smooth throughout, kind of similar to the one above

Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de l'Homme - I liked it but it wasn't distinct enough

Drakkar was my first cologne, used it for years, always liked it

I used to get the Vurt Black from Pacsun before they stopped making it, excellent substitute for Kenneth Cole Black or Polo Black.

eau de baux from loccitane is a good one that you can get cheap if they have a sale.

if you know what surfboard wax smells like, then this is fairly similar (though much, much more). (people with real noses say incense and cedar)

tabac is pretty cheap too, and is a great edc

I LOVED dulce and gabana

Liked intense 4/5

^^^ That is a nice collection... Is the can with the coin slot for your blades? That's smart.

I'm set on finding at least 3 colognes as I don't have any staples right now. One for daytime/work, one for going out at night, and one for more intimate outings.

I, too, like the more woody/musk scents with hints of citrus. So far, I think The One Gentleman is going to be my night scent. I would use Intense as a backup to that, though.

Have you smelled Versace Blue Jeans? I haven't had a chance to yet, but it sounds like a good candidate for a daytime, pretty light on the wallet too.

How would you describe cool water? i wanted to try that one but I have heard mixed reviews of it saying too generic etc etc

Trust me, you know what it smells like - just imagine walking past a group of 20 year old guys all gelled up for a night of clubbing. That wafting reek that follows them for blocks is Cool Water.

My campus absolutely reeks of Aqua di Gio every weekend. I thought it smelled douchey enough to begin with but now I have a more legitimate reason to avoid it like the plague.

Find another store.

I don't know where people come up with this age limit BS for scents, but they're idiots. If you like a scent, wear it, plain and simple.

For the record, I was born in the mid/late-80s and you can see the kind of scents that I wear (have worn), nobody's ever said I smell like an old man.

Most of the stuff I I hear about cool water isn't very nice. I just didn't want to say that lol

Nice list on basenotes. If i were to smell one what is the best for cheap.

Try oak at bath and body works i like it. Im 22 I use in rotation Ted lapidus pour lui and juicy coture dirty english. every once in awhile i will throw in curve crush.

 a little harsh - and besides, as someone who used to teach high schoolers, I can tell you I never smelled Cool Water in the classroom. kids just ain't wearing it anymore.

it's similar to Green Irish Tweed, but much flatter, "bluer", and certainly nothing to write home about. however, I've smelled much worse things (CK Escape for Men for example).

...

I agree totally with this advice and have nothing more to add.

+ another. My first cologne (when I was 13) was Polo Green. I'm sure it was too mature for me at 13, but who cares? Wear what you like.

The only time you have to worry about anyone else is when the lady in your life has an opinion. Even then, you don't have to please her every single day

Cool Water is too expensive for High School age kids in my area; they simply cover themselves with a huge overdose of AXE, if they use anything at all.

Seriously, walk into a high school classroom filled with a lot of guys, the stench will be so overpowering you will wonder if they shower at all!!

Fully agree. Just because a scent reminds someone of their grandpa doesn't make it an old man scent, it makes it a classic that has stood the test of time.

Wear what you like, and enjoy Your life.

This!

He's a sales clerk at a store.
If he was the all seeing, all knowing master of time space and dimension, I don't think he'd be wasting his time being a sales clerk at a store.

Sample and try different scents and wear what you like.
