13/16 Le Grelot 352 “Lotus” Médaille d’Or 1931 P.Hospital&Cie
It’s an old one with no detectable hone wear. French razors are exquisite. Lotus was branded in 1919 though the date on the blade is what I will go with. Le Grelot Lotus like this rarely come up for sale and are prized razors. Hold one in your hand and you will know why. The steel feels soft on the face like old Sheffield steel though is hard and holds an edge for a long time. This very well could be a characteristic of old French steel from Thiers though I’m unsure considering Sheffield and Swedish steel were also forged for Le Grelot razors. Round nose 3/4 hollow ground very thin at the edge with a micro bevel. Measures 13/16 from hone wear to spine but with such a pronounced triangular decorated spine the razor is easily 15/16 from top of spine to edge. It’s well balanced and hefty. Bottom jimps and top abbreviated jimps. Etching in tact looks flawless. The decorated spine is where the money is at, absolutely beautiful decorated seahorse shaped tooling. Custom carbon fiber scales with nickel wedge and hex pins that can be adjusted. These scales were masterfully made from an artisan in France from where I purchased this razor and makes the razor quite unique. They are smooth as silk and not a sharp edge to be found. You will not find another Grelot like this. The blade centers perfectly in the scales and is pinned solid with no flop. Comes shave ready to my specs. Honed on one piece of tape. No need to strop good to go.

7/8 though on the larger side of 14’s so actually 15/16 from hone wear to edge. Round nose 1/2-3/4 hollow ground very thin to the edge with micro bevel, bottom jimps. Neon blood red opaque acrylic scales triple pinned with inlaid “Solingen” metal logo. White plastic wedge with a hairline fissure. Hefty razor solid and well balanced. Razor centers perfect in the scales and pinned solid. A wonderful shaver and like all 14’s ground very thin easy to hone and holds an edge for a significant amount of time. Very little if no detectable hone wear. Comes shave ready to my specs. No need to strop good to go.
