What's new

2 new DE's in the arsenal

My mom was cleaning out the cabinet from her old sewing machine and found me a vintage gillette (likely my grandfathers, as I have several others that were his). It appears to be a 1935 senator, based on the date on the pack of blue blades that were with it. As I was leaving my dad pulled out an old razor to fuel my new obsession; he, sadly, has given up wet shaving. It is a 1954 Super Speed. Both razors cleaned up relatively well with a good soak and some toothpaste.

I have not used an open comb before, so I am shaving for work tomorrow with the senator.

Very nice! Not only do you have your grandfather's razor, but it's a Senator as well, which is highly prized. Congrats! Think of your old grand-dad when you are shaving in the morning.

Clean up that Senator and go to town, great shaver. I beleive, however, they were only made in 1938. Someone let me know if I'm wrong.

Good finds, even better when they stay in the family. I'm sure my grandfather used a DE at some point in his life, but he ditched them in favor of the Remington electrics when they appeared. When we were cleaning out his houses after he passed, we must have found half a dozen of those huge triple-foil Remingtons, but not a single DE.

I slapped a Personna in the Senator and had at it this morning. Different than the slim I am used to (I am still amazed how different each razor shaves), but it offered a good shave without much effort. I noticed a bit more drag with this razor. Not a pull, but just drag, which I attributed to the additional surface area of the comb. I plan to keep using it for a bit, and I do want to check the super speed out as well.

Congrats on the Senator. One of my favorite old Gillettes. And, at least for me, easier to wield than some of the other Open Combs I've used. Pics?

Congrats on getting some nice heirlooms but,
