What's new

2 * bk42 = ?

I am the proud new owner a pair of Heljestrand BK No.42 11/16 quarter hollow razors with original ivory scales. .

Is it worth having them restored? Enquiring minds want to know.

Absolutely! The BK No 42 is a fine shaver if ever there was one. Great razors even for the thickest beards and a wonderfully smooth shave.

The pic is a bit blurry, but those don't look like they need much "restoring". A good honing and you're in business.

Sorry for the image quality. Need better light, and maybe a better photog!
Both had some corrosion on the spine and some light spots on the blade faces and tang. I was thinking with some work they might take a nice mirror finish to match my MK no4.

No way. They are toast. I have been designated B&B's official razor disposal team, please send over for immediate disposal.

Oh man. I was afraid of that. I probably can put the P. Hospital le Grelot in the box too. Save some postage that way.

You could always do the restoration work yourself; then the answer is always yes.

Yes, I have cleaned up and honed a Dubl Duck special number 1, A morley clover and a couple other Ebay wonders. I am thinking because they are CVH and a pair and ivory that they might benefit from a more experienced hand. I don't know how much something like that would cost either. So, Ii am thinking out loud here.

My advice is do not unpin them just clean them up with some Maas and put a nice edge on them. If you would like some help with the edge let me know. :wink2:

Congrats on the great razors! I recently got my hands on two MK31. One is 11/16, the other 5/8; both are full hollow.

I almost forgot... 2 * bk42 = 1 for you and 1 for me

Definitely agree depending on what's needed but these look real clean to start. As others have stated, a little polishing and a nice edge and you'd be all set. Along that note though, I just saw a thread with restoration links and pricing if anyone knows where it is off-hand.

No, no, no, that can be dangerous-they must be delivered to me for proper disposal.

Ivory can easily be broken, I would leave it to someone with lots of experience, even then when unpinning or repinning, no guarantees it will not crack-so I have heard, I have never worked on ivory.

Hang on... a P. Hospital Le Grelot, a MK4, and now these? Your luck really is not fair...
Absolutely stunning razors  Enjoy them.

Yes, I've discovered how to make a small fortune in straight razors. You simply start off with a big one. And Doc there is a crack on the back side of one at the pin. I am thinking the restorer could use the wedge as a backer and a little ivory dust to make a filler. I am thinking of Sending them to Bob's razors. I bought the MK 4 from him and a mint Henckels 415. The P. Hospital needs it's TI stamina scales shortened just a bit and a little touch up.
