What's new

1st shave with slant: no worries!!!!!

Took my first shave with a Merkur slant today. After using a DE and str8s since 10/08 I finally decided to give it a whirl. Just a note to you new to slants and still apprehensive. NO WORRIES MATE. If you have developed a good technique then the slant should be no problem. On my first go with a 4 day old Irridium super, I was pleasured with a DFS/BBS. No nicks, blood or other calamities.
So if you have always wanted to try a slant but were affraid my advice is GO FER IT!!!!!!

I owned a slant when I first began using DE razors. My technique was not where it needed to be and it gave me the worst cut that I've ever had from a razor. I'm tempted sometimes to get another one and give it try.

If and when you want to take it to the next level, throw a feather blade into the slant razor……. It’s heavenly and you will hear a choir of angels singing )

Yes, that's what happens when you slice your carotid artery. :001_tt2:

No, seriously, the slant is a nice shaver. As far as I can tell, there's essentially no difference between the pre-War (as in pre-WW2) Hoffritz slants and the newest Merkur. Go slowly, do NOT press, and you should be fine.

I am a big fan of the Feather+Slant combo. I don't find it a dangerous combination at all. Very smooth. I have had the experience, like many others, of getting a bad impression about a razor due to bad technique early on in the learning curve. When possible, it is fun to go back and try the same razors again, sometimes with different results, sometimes not.

The slanted razor isn't the hazardous device it is made out to be. The fact the blade is slanted isn't the issue, it's the fact the blade is also twisted as well as having differing exposure along its length that makes it an atypical shaver. Good technique and preparation will definitely mitigate any potential issues with a slanted razor.

I only use my slant on weekends because I can do a proper prep and take my time, I really look forward to using it.
