i would assume it was made during the year of 1954 so 1-4 but you dont see these cases come up very often so maybe it was only produced during certain quarters.

Note: This first group of photos is for the 1954 TV Special, which appears in all respects to look like a standard 40's Gillette Superspeed

The Gillette TV superspeed was ONLY made during the year 1954, and 1958 . The 1954 TV Special razor had a Gillette 1940's style Super Speed design, it was a special limited edition re-release promoting the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports . The 1958 version can be discerned from the 60's superspeed
by the lack of banding on the handle.

Manufacturer: Gillette

Dates in Production: 1954 Date Code Z3 and Z4 ONLY

Thanks for the info Alex )

Ok I had to ask, what proof is there that Gillette only used a Z3 and Z4 is there a Difference in the Razors from Z1, Z2 and Z3, Z4 ? Why wouldn't Gillette used any left over Z1's or Z2's for this 1954 Special? Any proof of Z3 and Z4's were used ? Besides finding sets in that manner?

I am really curious about this because I have seen some of these 1954 TV Special sets with Z1 or a Z2?

Sorry if I am out of line , but I just had to ask :eek:/

The advertising for the TV specials were just for those years only. Do you have a pic of the other razors with different dates?

I'm very new to gillette history, but it seems like they mixed and matched parts a lot. It doesn't seem unreasonable that they might use leftover Z1 or Z2's in the TV case, especially if the Z3 and Z4 razors weren't different in any way.

The dates of the Super Speed 1940's style with Z3 and Z4 is the determining factor in the TV Special, any other Super Speed with z is not relevant.

So mine would be a 1954 superspeed 1st quarter?

From Wiki:

1950-1988 (letter codes)

The single-letter date codes are accompanied by a number, which corresponds to the quarter of the year. So 'O-1' means 1969, January-March. Date codes on blades (see above) also continued through this period.

The dates of the Super Speed 1940's style with Z3 and Z4 is the determining factor in the TV Special, any other Super Speed with z is not relevant.

So is the Z3 date code the first for the 50's style SS? If that's true, does that mean every Z3-4 in 40's SS style is a TV special?

Thank you! Should have checked the wiki in the first place. I'm still a little unclear though.

The 40's style was produced in Z1 and Z2. Then the flair tip and the TV case were introduced in Z3 and Z4. I guess I was asking if every 40's style Z3 and Z4 were TV case models, or if there were still standard case models being produced concurrently with the TV case and flair tip models. If you found a Z3 or Z4 40's style in the standard case, could that be a correct match? Or is every 40's style Z3 and Z4 from a TV case set?

Yes, any z3 and z4 dated Super Speed razor is a TV Special Razor. This is a re-issue of the 1940's design Super speed/special limited edition re-release promoting the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports.
