1953 #58 Gillette Coronation...

Got given this today and very nice it is too. Using the shave wiki I believe it is a 1953 #58 Coronation Gillette. It was given to my Uncle by my Great Grandmother when he was conscripted into the RAF in 1953.

I've started to get interested in acquiring one of these razors. Yours looks like a great example. But I thought the case needed to have a crown on it for it to be considered a 'coronation' set.

your set is a #58 from 1953-1955. Since 1956 there is a loop in the case to hold the knob

He seems to think it was a Coronation model. I showed him this ad and he distinctly remembers it.

TBH the case is the faded and battered it could have had a crown. According to the shave wiki a Nickel plated #58 Coronation should weigh 68gr, this razor weighs 69gr with a Gillette Bleue loaded. Also the space for the blade holder fits a modern Gillette Bleue dispenser perfectly.

I have just had a shave with it using a Gillette Bleue. TBH I have only shaved with a Gillette Bleue once and I found it to be too aggressive for me in my R89. But in this razor that blade seemed to be a lot more aggressive. I has given me a close shave, but a very irritated one. So I think I require a bit more practice with this razor.

After doing some more reading on the Coronation model, it does have to have the Crown. But it is a #58, this is where I get confused, would it be a Tech or a Superspeed?

The #58 would be commonly known as a Rocket. I've seen it referred to as an Aristocrat as well.

btw, I was doing some research, it seems like only the models with patent pending were coronation ones, made in 1953/54. From 1955 they have patent 694,093.

The patent pending is definitely the correct version for the Coronation cases. Only in 1955 IIRC they started stamping the Brit. Pat. 694.093.

They may have sold both aluminum and all brass razors in those cases, though. I'm not sure about that.

Thx, I actually found that answer in another old thread that you provided :)

I had a Coronation set with the aluminum razor in it, but I sold that. It could have been a mismatch, but I think it was the correct combo.

I've seen 3 variations of the #58

- Brass (68g) Patent Pending
- Alu (34g) Patent Pending
- Brass 68g Patent 694,093

I haven't seen a alu one with patent 694,093 (or maybe just haven't looked at enough photos) Do they exist?
