What's new

1948 Super Speed, 1960 Super speed or new parker 90?

Is it worth finding a good old super speed?

Does anyone use the Parker DE razors and are they as good?

I'm looking at a couple SS's, but the Parkers look very similar in design, are cheap, and new.

Any advice from the crowd?

I would go with the '48-'50 Super Speed given those choices. Although, you must understand that I do not use a razor regularly that is younger than 60 years old and have no desire to even try anything made in the last 20 years. The quality of the 40's style Super Speeds are hard to beat and you can get them as cheap, or cheaper, than a Parker. See the SS ID thread in my sig for more info.

my first de was a 1960 super speed and it still gives me a good, comfortable, flawless shave every time - even in a hurry

my best shaves these days are with a late 40s or early 50s milord, which is essentially a gold plated super speed from that era

so you can't go wrong with either of the super speeds, in my opinion

I'd recommend a Super Speed. Seems like those who have used Parker TTOs often remark that the build quality is not good.

I have the 40's style and a 68 superspeed and they're great. I also have a 3 piece Parker 89R which I also like. I'm not to sure on the TTO Parkers though. The 3 piece Parkers are well made for the price.

I have to agree with the SS votes. I am new to the wet shaving thing. I looked at a new Parker, and an old 50's SS. I picked the SS and love it. The Parker was pretty, but I wasn't too sure about it's build quality...

I think you will find very few people here who would recommend a Parker over a Super Speed. I have a '61 SS and it's great.

Of the razors you asked about, I only have experience with the late 40s super speed. It is a great razor that I highly recommend.

It seems that the earlier super speeds have a little more heft to them than the later flaretips, but I've found that I prefer the knurling on the flaretips as it provides a better grip.

That's especially true for the King of Super Speeds-the Red Tip.

If the razor is in good condition a 50-60-70 year old razor should shave as well as a new razor. I love my Parker but I've gotten great shaves from my Super Adjustable as well as my Tech. It's a matter of good engineering, razor design and your technique.

I have used quite a few of the different Superspeed models, and my recommendation would be for the Superspeed as well. Specifically for the 40's style Superspeed.

Gillette built the Superspeeds like a tank, and even though they are 60+ years old, they still shave perfectly just like the day they came from the factory.

Parker has a pretty **** poor reputation on this board: they are known for making ****ty quality products, that have severe quality control issues.

Supposedly they have made improvements in their designs, but there have not been many reviews coming in yet to back up those claims.

My parker 96r is the new generation TTO head it is moderately aggressive and shaves smooth it's construction seems quite substantial the overall quality seems excellent to me. I'm getting BBS shaves no cuts weepers or burn. Can't ask much more from a razor I've been using domestic Wilkerson and Personna, Shark and Dorco Blades and have had excellent results with all the blades
