1916 "Barber Pole" Single Ring from Military Set

Just picked up this single ring type razor that looks like it came from the "Military Set"

Mr Razor shows it as 1918, mine is an early "D" serial number making it 1916

I placed it between a regular single ring and a Bostonian for comparsion. You can see the fatter handle, but it is not as solid as the Bostonian. I like the handle style, surprised Gillette did not use it (to my knowlege which is sparse) on other razors of this period. It does show up on the #15 Aristocrat in a TTO format.

Now all I need to do is find the case....

I just tried this razor out. Very aggressive. Looks like there is more blade exposed (smaller comb), and more angle. However, if you want to remove everything down to 1 micron below skin surface, this works.

You know, the bulldog (I believe) has the same head as an old-type single ring, but the two of them shave very differently for me. Once I got the hang of the bulldog's heft, I think I get better, closer shaves with it over the single ring. It just requires a very light touch, and close attention to angle. I'd recommend shaving with it for a couple weeks.

It does look like the top part is the same part as the single ring, but the combs are shorter.

The blade looks like it has more exposure, i.e., not as close to the combs either.

Hi there,

I've used lots of razors over the years, shaving with anything from a Tech to various OC types. The old Bulldog is THE most aggressive razor I've tried.

Chet's right I believe when he mentioned the head being the same type as an old type Single Ring. Both are waaay too tough for my face, but the extra weight of the Bulldog makes the shave particularly excruciating.

That is one bad doggie...........

Oh, here's a pic of that rabid 1919 canine:
