12k touch up

Been using a straight for little over a month. Guessing I'd need to do a touch up eventually, I asked my GF to get me a 12k Naniwa for my B'day. When it came I lapped it and went for it with the straight. Just shaved with said straight and WOW:eek:. What a difference, smooth as silk with no tugging. I guess when I tried to strop for the 1st time I ruined the edge. I encountered tugging with all shaves and put it down to technique. I wish I had done this sooner.
I think I might be catching the honing bug hmmm.....

Glad to hear everything's working out for you.

I hate to point this out, but the razor was not shave ready. If you can believe it, a razor can get even better than just off the 12k.

This is a perfect example of why every straight shaver should have at least a touch-up hone. It's easy to screw up the edge and you need to be able to bring it back yourself.

Obviously - OP said he probably ruined the edge by stropping!

If it was the Rudd he bought from me it was certainly shave-ready on receipt.

Hi Neil, I was not for a second meaning the razor was not shave ready! It was definitely my stropping. Now that I am getting the hang of stropping I see how bad I was at it, way too much pressure and the strop not pulled tight enough. I stupidly tried to strop it before the first shave. The amount of nicks show just how terrible I was:frown:.
I also want to say I wouldn't hesitate to buy another razor from you and a strop for that matter. I also recommend anyone in the UK to do the same.
PS just had another awesome shave with the Rudd!

I knew that - we had a good enough rapport to be able to sort it out between us if that was the case and I know you would have contacted me directly being the decent chap that you are.

I just wanted to put Leighton straight! Obviously his crystal ball needs cleaning...

All the Best,
Neil.

I've read nothing but great things about the Naniwa 12k. Though, for the price, I don't think it's very practical for someone like me. I guess the Chinese 12k will have to do. :c17:

There is nothing wrong with the Chinese 12K other than being very slow. It produces a buttery smooth edge. I found lapping it was fairly easy too.
Right on. I here awesome things about the Chinese too, even though it's not 'the' stone to own. I think it's more my style anyway.
