101 Chatter

I need some help. My R101 is chattering like crazy. Just got this razor, it is very nice. It gives a real nice shave, but cant handle the chatter. Any ideas? Ive tried varius angles

I would think getting the correct angle is the first step. If that is not getting an improvement change the blade. What was your previous razor and blade combination?

Are you sure you have it assembled correctly? If I recall, when I started with my R41 (2010), I had the baseplate upside down for a while.

Previous razor is Merkur 25 OC I think. I really like it.

Yes, the R41/R101 is quite prone to the blade vibrating, as it does not provide a lot of support to the blade with the high amount of blade exposure it has. That's the reason for it... the blade's just not dampened very much like it is in most other razors. It will get worse at steeper blade angles (handle down closer to your face), as the blade gets strummed like a guitar string by your beard. You should try a very shallow angle. Put the cap on your face, then lower down until the blade is just touching your face. Generally speaking, if it's really bad, it's probably a sign that your beard hair is not softened enough. The stiffer the hair, the more the blade is going to resonate. You might try upping the ante on your prep. Really get it soaked with water well - maybe trying lathering up and letting it sit for a a few minutes before you shave. If you're ok with showering before you shave, give your face a good wash down with some facial scrub in the shower. That will help soften up the hairs as well.

You might also try other blades. Some may be thicker/heavier than others (although would only be subtly so), and of course a thicker blade would help reduce vibration.
