What's new

<$100 for the next year on shaving supplies

Ok gents, it's time to slow down the purchasing. Recently, I've acquired a bunch of really great items including custom straight razors, fine DEs, strops, hones, soaps, brushes, etc. etc. etc. Now, I'm going to try to go through the next year spending less than $100 on shaving gear.

The rules:

1. The orders that I have already placed don't count against my $100 limit.
2. Any shaving related purchase counts including blades, soaps, AS, even EDTs, etc.
3. Presents don't count

This will be a thread that logs my temptations and progress, and will test my self control. I'll log all of my purchases, but there won't be nearly as many as my temptations... As a reward, I'll probably treat myself to another custom Robert Williams razor, but I'll have to wait on that.

Wish me luck :thumbup1:

That should be easy enough to do. After all you only need ONE soap/cream and ONE aftershave product at a time to get the job done. ONE brush and ONE razor/straight. But if your using a DE or SE I might suggest more than one blade for your own comfort. :001_rolle

Good Luck,

BTW, what happens if you fall off the wagon and go over the limit?

Thanks for the good luck wishes.

@ Krissy, if I don't make it, I prove to myself that I don't have the requisite self control to be trusted around you guys anymore

In case anyone is wondering, I'm not in a financial bind or anything (yet :frown:), but I've spent a ridiculous amount of money on this stuff already. So, I have to show myself that I am still able to be responsible with my money when I want too...

Paul,

You know how I know you won't make it? You're already interested in the B&B 2009 LE brush...you can kiss that $100 good-bye.

sounds good! Do you get to sell things and put that money toward purchases?
+1 ... an excellent suggestion.

Good Luck with your plan ... I consider myself ahead of the game if I can limit my shaving purchases to $100 a MONTH.

I have all the stuff I need to keep shaving for about the next ten years ... but I have no illusions about trying to curtail my *AD(s).

Do a "shaving budget". I have one. Serious.

When I started, I had been bitten hard so hard by the shaving bug that I was up to almost 500$ in just a month. That's far too much, but hey, I was starting and you have to incur some expenses upfront

So I did an excelsheet in which I log all shaving related purchases. Since I needed to slow down the spending burn rate, I added a tab in my excelsheet in which I keep a wish list of shaving supplies I'd like next, with prices for each. My objective is to spend no more than 50$ per month in shaving stuff, which is reasonable enough and sustainable without a problem over the long run (at least for me).

So for each item in my wish list, I put a priority indicator that reflects when this item should be bought (this month, in 2 months, on 3 months, etc).

Of course, my wish list keeps changing and the priorities keep changing too, but that's fine. Then, at the beginning of the month, I decide on up to 50$ worth of purchases and I buy (...that makes me think that October 1st is just around the corner :w00t: )

I believe my shaving budget is gratifying, helps personal discipline, and reduces impulsive buying.

Depending on your shave den current situation, 100$ a year might be too aggressive. I know it would not be realistic for me and I would fail miserably trying to stay at 100$ for a full year. I believe in setting moderate, reasonable targets. If you put the bar far too low compared to what you usually spend, you're not going to respect it and it defeats the whole purpose of the exercise.

My 2 cents :001_smile

No... It violates the spirit of the challenge.
Another way to approach it ... whatever you sell from your current den, put that money towards a gift for your wife. She can return the favor by buying you presents of new shaving stuff. Win-Win situation, all the way around.

I admire your stand. I think it can be done. As a suggestion, how about a new social group, "The PennyPinchers". If we can get 5 other members of over 750 posts or more to join I will follow your rules for a year.
