This one appears almost new, definitely not extensive use - both sides. I actually tested it today, honing on the Swaty after honing on my 8k. Definitely shaved better after the Swaty. Pretty decent shave for a first use.
If the original is better, I may keep an eye out for a deal. I noticed...
I've encountered plenty of unlabeled Washita that I would have no trouble believing predated Pike/Norton. Always suspected their sources either ran dry or were bought by Norton to corner the market back when Washita was basically the undisputed best hone on earth for woodworkers.
Yeah I’ve got one that has dimensions and color far enough off Norton perfection that I’m sure it predates. It’s the single best one I’ve ever used personally, but I haven’t used many since it’s tough to score a deal without just gambling on white stones.
Will I get good results going from a 6000 grit King to a Barbers hone to a pasted strop? I think I read that a Barbers hone can vary from 8000 to 10000, I have two, one is a Franz Swaty the other a Pike. Are they different grits?
Bumping this because I bought another "Welch Razor Hone" on eBay. similar looking paddle, except this one has a handle, similar label (but different text), and much clearer this time.
"JOS. Louden's Super Fine Welch Razor Hone."
"For honing and setting a fine and delicate edge to razors...
One of the sites mentions these were selling escher hones as partners, flagship brands or subsidiaries:
Escher & Co. (E & Co.)
J.G Escher & Sohn(s) (JGES)
S.R. Droescher, Inc.
The Genuine Water Hone
The Celebrated Water Razor Hone
Karl Bracher Jr.(s)
Fox Cutlery (The Fox No.44)
I did a test, I wet the Pike and the Swaty and rubbed them together. The Pike is green, the Swaty is brown, the swarth was green. I have a unknown brand barbers hone which is green and I rubbed it against the Swaty and got brown. The unknown hone feels a little less smooth. What does this...
...Thats nice looking stones, congratulations!
Just got myself my first ark aswell, coinsidentally from a watchmaker. It is a small vintage pikehone a hard white translusive. Took like forever to flatten, hard little stone. Going to try a razor on it but have too read up a bit on them. Posting...
I just wanted to verify, that anything in this list will "officially" be escher if it's labeled as such, or Thuri otherwise? I thought i had read once "the genuine water hone" was an escher...but as we can see there is a lot of confusion :)
I don't believe it's impossible to get top quality coticules mined today. They aren't picking up leftovers from mines that existed 2000 years ago, they're digging deeper and in new areas. Surely there are top quality stones in the ground that haven't been pulled yet.
That said, I'd agree that...
This is my guess as well, it is most likely for a specific sharpening task - not razors.
Aside from slip stones and the like (generic for various shapes),many specialty stone shapes were created to hone specific shapes of items.
Someone's lucky day. I am weeding out some items and would like to sell as a lot. I don't want to separate at this time.

Pike/Norton used to make a whole line of convex and concave stones for woodworkers, machinists and other specialties. They were meant to be used with an elliptical stroke ( back and forth, while moving side to side) on gouges, scrapers, chisels, bits, cutters and specialty plane blades. Many...
You can sure break out in a sweat lapping a hard Ark. It is a tough stone
We thought that might be the case but a lot of work for a rub stone. Coincidentally, a few years ago I got a 9” Coticule from a “we buy gold” guy who wanted a smaller rub stone. I gladly took it off his hands
Pike made several different barber hones, so it would be hard/impossible to compare to a Swaty without knowing which one. Then there's the condition factor. Barber hones in general don't age well and it seems that they can deteriorate and become less usable. I've run across a higher percentage...
I was using diamond hones from Harbor Freight, worn a bit, but I felt I was getting more done mixing it up with both bread knife and 45's. Bevel set was a bear....started with India stones to just get a bit of a shape to it. I've gone too far with them in the past and gotten micro chipping as a...
I started shaving again after 7 years with a beard in August last year, so in this endeavor almost a year now. I started out with a 5/8" Dovo best, and although I believe it to be a decent razor with none of the problems these suffer from, my intuitive side told me there was something better to...
