Why didn't Gillette ever make a slant?

Well, yes. Think of this as removing the old stick shift Gillette slide, and installing an automatic Gillette slide. It also adds a considerable level of stiffness to the blade, which changes the blade feel on the face to something approaching an SE blade. In all other respects, it remains a...

Why didn't Gillette ever make a slant?

Old thread, but we now have the answer. Gillette could have, very easily, but choose not to because... Slants would have been an interesting addition to their line of products. At least it can still be done retroactively, to a number of vintage Gillette razors, including the stamped Tech, or...

    Wanton destruction

With some very slight modifications to the original jig, I've worked out how to slantify brass Gillette Techs, preserving perfectly the original geometry, only adding the torsion twist. This is a massive tribute to the original jig design by @twhite . If the die had been made any other way, it...

Just shaved beard and it's really thin

If you want your beard to look fuller, the best way to do that is to not have it end at the jawline. Grow it all the way down to where your neck starts. That sounds a bit confusing. Pretend to choke yourself with one hand. Everything above your fingers stays, everything below gets shaved off...

    Wanton destruction

Earlier I posted a picture of a "user grade" slanted single ring. When I loaded a blade to use it, I noticed that the top cap had to be held in place to center the blade during loading. Curious, I investigated further. What happened next will amaze you! I kid, I kid! The thing about being a...

Might be the nicest one yet. Certainly the closest to the Valencia that inspired it. A bit safer to load too, since the single ring uses the long screw for tightening.

    Lovely little travel razor

That's one of the nicer German/Feather travel razor sets I've seen.

I had a lot of fun doing this with you. Because of the unique challenges offered by the Tuckaway's baseplate, we had to slant each part individually, then use annealing and pressure to hand fit the two sections together. The raised flat baseplate meant that only the edge of the baseplate held...

    Stupid question time

The older I get, the more my thoughts turn to the hereafter. I walk into a room and ask myself, "Now what was I in here after?"

    Vintage Gillette Razors

1936 Gillette Aristocrat (first British TTO) heavy, substantial, open combed and just beautifully crafted. Gillette never made a more beautiful razor... Except perhaps in the British No. 58 set, the very last of Gillette's Aristocrat Jrs., and perhaps the only one of those to share some of the...

    Blackland Blackbird Opinion

The Blackbird is my favorite "Modern" razor. It's about as close as a person can get to a perfect razor. Shane can call it inspired by the SR-71 Blackbird, but to me it has an art deco styling that would not have been out of place in the 1920's. (Not comparing it to razors of that era, but...

I suspect it will be a moot point if Tom makes a cap jig to restore that geometry.

The owner of that bell end said the razor was unusable. Looking at it now, at least it looks usable. It's at a point now where a re-plater might be able to restore it to something approaching its original grace and beauty. I happen to agree about the top cap. Easier to swap it out, a bit harder...

    Wanton destruction

I would melt down a hundred old type brownies to fix one bell handle aristocrat. I don't think most people realize just how rare those are. Edit: you make a cap jig and you could fix efsk's valencia slant. Of course, it wouldn't be a slant anymore.

Took blade out of razor, put it back in and it was HORRIBLE

I had something similar (a shocking, unexpected degradation in the shave) happen to me once. The mystery was solved when I caught my wife shaving the pills off her sweaters with my razor.

Calling all shavers who get over 14 shaves from one disposable blade...

Regarding #2, that's not entirely the case. A Shake Sharp razor paired with a good carbon, like a NOS Gillette Super Blue blade, will give several months of smooth comfortable shaves, provided you flip the blade over and dry it after every shave. The built in hone needs to be cleaned with...

So, as I was saying, in our alternate timeline, when Gillette produced slants for a brief time before 1928... :cuppa:

Looking at the close-ups, it reminds me a lot of the first gen shake sharp razors, at least exposure wise. A lot of people like to stack two blades (not shims) in those, and claim that the resulting shave is one of the best attainable. I wonder if the same could be done with that razor.

This is an apt thread for that razor to be mentioned. For any guests who might stumble on this thread, the Roedter 1909 is a modified Fatip. The inside of the top cap is ground down. The blade is held nearly horizontal, and mostly unsupported. The resulting shave can best be described as "riding...

    Wanton destruction

Jmudrick brought up that point in a different thread as well, that the Fatip shares more with the old type than the New, at least in shaving profile. I conceded him that point, and to you as well. Despite those similarities, the one person (Jmudrick) who has used both said the razors do not...
