    creating scales

When crafting scales from blanks (1/8 - 3/8) which is the preferred saw for shaping: band or scroll? I know the band saw has more power but I'm interested in the pros and cons of each. Thanks everyone.

    saw issue in doing scales

Here's my current impasse: A 1 x 6 x 1/4 Aformosia blank I want to section into two 1/8 blanks. I've tried with coping and Japanese saws, using clamps, and just can't keep it straight. I think my method is correct (letting the saw do the work, taking your time, appropriate blades) but an...

    saw issue in doing scales

Thanks Ice-Man. Looks promising but isn't readily available in North America. For the time being I am using Amazon as my primary tool source.

    saw issue in doing scales

Thanks LJS. I know a mitre or chop saw would be the quickest but I would only have a single use for either. With a scroll or band saw I could also use for scale cutting. I'm on a budget (say 250) and have been advised there are really no good saws in my range. My materials are hardwood...

    saw issue in doing scales

Have a few hardwood blanks (~6 x 3/4 in) that I need to section into 1/8 in. slabs. After some experimenting I've concluded that my doing this by hand with a coping or Japanese saw won't yield good results. I'm working with some woods (bog oak, kauri) that I don't want to botch in the learning...

    Why Hone Edge Leading?

Not clear on the stone he was using -- sure did not look like bevel setting. I can conclude that circular honing is viable with higher grits?

    Why Hone Edge Leading?

Interesting. I thought circles were for bevel setting only. Would you do high end (8K+) touch up honing in circles?

    feedback, Koraat-Knives

Anyone familiar with this Austrian vendor? They do custom blades.

    hone & paste

Slash how would you compare diamond pastes on leather to balsa. Nuance or big difference?

There are other models besides mine -- guessing they would be same quality. FYI I honed from 8K up. Didn't have to set bevel. Not shave ready as advertised but close.

6/8, scales same size as Naker Armor

Somewhat surprised that Gold Dollar would pop up; they've received mixed reviews. Then again you can be positively surprised. Nor are all things Chinese low quality. I ordered a lower cost straight Kure-Nai knowing there was serious margin for disappointment. Upon receipt it required honing...

    So, a guy walks up....

Without doubt. I would argue that someone who takes to the shavette experience is more likely to have a positive transition to straight shaving.

I did it! Shaved with a straight for the first time

Straight shaving is a focused practice; I'd liken it to zen in some ways. For what it's worth my brush lathering in view of this is two-step: lather the face, shave. Then the neck. This gives you more flexibility (& promotes refining your technique) while keeping the lather fresh. Congrats...

$250 & up for something never tried before? I would counsel some experience with a shavette before jumping. Straight razor shaving is not for everyone -- that's why it's so elegant.

    hand scaling tools

Not yet 5whiskey. Since my June posting I've acquired some saw attachments for my dremel so I will have a non manual option. I have a cast iron desk vise which seems apt. I acquired bog oak & kauri blanks which I'll tackle after I have a few scales under my belt -- don't want to screw those...

Menthol Overload. 15+ products tested inside.

Experiment -- there are all kinds of skin products not labeled aftershave that are as wholesome as anything marketed for shaving.

My proficiency with tools is limited to house repairs. A pic or sketch would help. Thanks CSL.

Menthol Overload. 15+ products tested inside.

Menthol in my experience is about experience not scent. I love it. For aftershave I'd offer a couple of suggestions that some may consider heretical. Be reminded that menthol is used in many topical skin products -- especially analgesics: Biofreeze gel gives you a 5% menthol hit, along with...
