R41 2013

Muhle R41 2013 is my third razor, used a Gillette 25 years ago, and bought Edwin Jager DE89 recently, after 25 years of disposables and cartridges. Out of a sudden I realized that many years ago I had no problems with shaving, it was not something I hate... And it was when I shaved with DE razor, Gillette... So I found online and bought EJ DE89LBL.

It is a nice good razor, still I could not have a clean shave under my chin, and had to make 3 passes to get shaved. My beard is not dense, and I shave each second day. But my hair is wire-like... So I figured I need more aggressive razor, to make shave in 1 or 2 passes + some additional shaving in problematic places, no more, as my skin is not so hard.

So the Muhle R41 came to my life. I saw those bloody shavings in youtube and all the talks about the beast in bathroom, so I decided just to be slow, to pay decent attention, and keep the same angle while shaving.

I dont like to brag and I can not say I am a pro, no way. Still I got no cuts, no nicks during the first several shavings. First cut was in my 5th, because I am loosing my attention and getting careless )) Each time I have a very, very clean shave - like never before!

And I was right about the aggressiveness - it is not a razor makes you hurt, - its your hand. So, if your hands are not shaking - I believe you can have a perfect shave, the best one. And nothing to fear about.

And, thanks to R41 - I love shaving ))) I love concentration I need to make things smooth, I love the result, I love this perfect tool....

Very close, smooth BBS shaver! Just don't use too many passes or your face will burn for half of the day! Love this razor though. Mine immigrated directly from Germany after my wife's visit. Thanks babe!

Early this year, I began to hear rumors of a new version of the Mühle R41 which had been introduced to European customers quietly and without fanfare. I first saw pictures of the new model on a Spanish website. The new version had a larger top cap, and the base plate had also been enlarged slightly. No new model number had been assigned, and the original packaging had not been modified in any way. I remembered how quietly Mühle's new V2 series of shave brushes had been introduced, and suspected that they were doing the same with the R41.
The R41 has been controversial since its introduction--with many users loving it, while others found it "too much". This was especially true in Europe. After verifying the rumors, I ordered the new R41 head directly from Muhle and began to test it a month ago.
On first examination, it was very hard to see any differences except by a side-by-side comparison with the previous model. Differences are subtle indeed, but a close look shows that the new version has a slightly larger top cap (20.1mm) and base plate. The three close-up photos included with this review show the best way to identify the new model: the amount of blade exposure is the best and easiest identifying characteristic.
Could I tell the differences in shaving? Most definitely!
While the new version seems every bit as aggressive/effective as the original, it is significantly better behaved. The modifications seem geared toward making it easier and safer to use, and towards eliminating the blade flex that is sometimes noted with thinner blades.
I was concerned that it might have modifications that reduced its effectiveness, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I tried three- and four-pass shaves and received fine BBS shave with each approach.
I tried shaves with the 2013 on the left side of my face, and the original version on the right. For the next two weeks, I continued this testing procedure, alternating sides every day. I tried different blades and soaps/creams, sometimes with three passes and sometimes four—all with BBS results.
It took a few days to adjust to the new blade angle that the 2013 seemed to require. Because of the reduced blade exposure, the shallow angle I used previously was no longer possible, but a minor adjustment that did not affect shave quality in the least was easy to learn.
Is there any difference in the shave at all? Yes, but difficult to detect.
Does anyone remember the playing card test that Gillette used years ago? To do it, one draws a playing card (or business card) ATG along the cheek, holding it perpendicular to the face and listening for audible feedback.
I waited a full 12 hours and tried the card-scratch test on each side of my face. My suspicions were confirmed—the shave with the newer version did not last as long. But then, it was only detectable after 12 hours, and only with the card. I could not feel any difference to the touch! I repeated the card test over a two week period to verify my findings.
I am now leaning toward the opinion that the original R41 is a little more aggressive. The shave on that side is closer, but only by a tiny amount, and only with a three-pass shave. With four passes, both sides are excellent. On the other hand, the 2013 side had no irritation at all (as detected by a strong dose of Tabac cologne applied immediately after my shaves).
With over 450 shaves with the original R41, I have to say that the refined 2013 model should be a hit with all lovers of aggressive razors!
This is a summary of my impressions of the Mühle R41 2013 model:
The Mühle R41 2013, is a stunning pieces of craftsmanship, with flawless plating that reminded me of polished sterling or rhodium. During my testing, I used the original and longer, heavier Grande handles. They both had excellent size and heft, were well-balanced and felt good in my hands. During the testing, I alternate randomly between them. I feel that the shorter handle was more nimble, and that the Grande's extra length and weight also added to my shaving experience. In addition, I tried the Griest brass handle which is both short (3 inches) and heavy (111 grams). I liked this configuration very much as well.
Price: The cost of this razor depends on how carefully you shop. I bought mine for $45, and I’ve seen prices ranging from $36-$61*. The razor offers high value for the money. I gave the price a "10".
Quality: This is a beautiful and functional piece of craftsmanship. Mühle is known for high quality manufacturing standards and Rolls-Royce quality plating. I found the R41 to excel in every dimension of quality. I scored a "10" here.
User Friendly: I gave it a "9" because I actually prefer two- and three-piece razors for ease of cleaning. The extra few seconds it takes to replace a blade every few days I find negligible. The grip and balance contribute to great control and performance. I felt this razor made sure, close and comfortable shaves easy. I know that other shavers prefer TTO mechanisms, so I did not give it a top score in this category."9"
Grip: The grip and its finish are two of the R41's finest features. The texturing is attractive and provides a secure grip under slippery conditions. The handles are large enough to be well-suited to most users, but small enough to be very nimble. The Griest handle's knurling makes for an even better grip. A "9".
Ease of Blade Replacement: Personally, I like three-piece razors, especially this one. The quality of construction is even evident in the cut of the threads that bind it together. It is so well fitted that it screws into the head as smoothly as if it were coated with grease. A "9”.
Aggressiveness: This is an aggressive and effective razor capable of giving really fine shaves. With a sharp blade like Feathers, Perma-Sharps or Personna Med Preps it is arguably in a class by itself. This razor gives really fine, close and comfortable shaves. The 2013 model corrects the original version's tendency to "bite" because of blade exposure and flex with thinner blades, while providing a nearly identical shave. The only difference I could detect is a slight reduction in shave longevity, not closeness. "10"
Adjustability: This is a non-adjustable razor. The scoring shows as “1” because “N/A” is no longer a rating choice. However, I think it’s perfect the way it is.
Balance: I like the overall weight and balance of this razor very much. It is perfectly balanced for ease of use. A "10"
Overall: I still have difficulty holding back my enthusiasm for this razor. It’s just that good. It is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and for me, shaves better than any DE or SE razor I’ve ever used. The refinements in the 2013 model make it easier to use. One can shave freely and easily without the need for constant concentration. The refibenents are just that--they make the razor safer and easier to use. In my testing, the changes only effect the longevity of the shave, not the closeness.
I do not hesitate to recommend the R41 2013 to anyone who desires an aggressive razor. The new model also seems to have corrected the earlier version's tendency to shorten blade life. For me, sharp, smooth blades work best. I've had great success with Feathers, Personna Med Preps and Labs, Russian Perma-Sharps and Gillette Yellows.

Finally decided to purchase the Muhle 2013 R41 and received it not too long ago.

I also own the 2011 R41 and my overall experience with it has been good if not great, except for the blade flex/chatter which caused irritation and blade skipping. I have always used feather blades with the 2011 R41 which give me 1 1/2 to 2 shaves. I have sensitive skin and a tough wire type beard that enjoys growing in a whirlpool fashion, especially around my neck.

Upon receiving the 2013 version, I loaded it with a fresh feather, put on my Ikon bulldog II handle and proceeded to do my normal beard prep on my 3 day beard growth. I loaded my chubby 2 with MDC unscented and face lathered.

I start WTG pass and did not feel any tugging, blade flex and or chatter. The razor got rid of a lot of hair just like the 2011. I continued with my XTG pass (XTG for me is also an ATG due to my beard growth) and only felt smoothness and the same with the ATG pass.

I did require a little more touch up than with the 2011, but the shave with the 2013 was a great irritation free BBS!

On my second shave, same setup (2 day growth), I did feel the feather blade deteriorate during the mid part of the shave. I was able to get the same shave again with little irritation due to blade failure.

I was in the market for a razor similar in efficiency as the 2011 R41 without any blade flex. I think I found it, the 2013 R41. I did not stress looking for any particular angles I just shaved with it. I will have to say that it is not a loud razor but if loudness equals blade flex, no thank you.

I have not felt like this about a razor so far, I do not want to say that it is perfect, but it feels like that now. I will sure try other blades with it, especially since another member (Evil4blue thanks brother!) PIF'd some blades to me.

I will have to add that the 2013 R41 is smoother than the 2011 R41. If you really love the 2011 R41 but have problems with it due to irritation and blade flex plus have a thick beard, I highly recommend the 2013 R41 version.

After hearing of a new head design, then seeing a bargain on Ebay for both a 2013 R41 and another razor I was unfamiliar with, plus free shipping included, I had to give it a try. Right off the bat I noticed that my usual razor angles were not going to work well (especially on the first pass) and so with a little adjusting I found an approximation that worked. I was not a fan after my first pass, I have been shaving for several years and had yet to run into a razor that gave me that much trouble since I had established a repeatable technique. The second pass was much better. The third pass was comfortable and I had an irritation free BBS on my first try with this razor without needing any touchup. I did feel like it took some real concentration to achieve though. The interesting part was that after 12 hours I still had a BBS. That simply doesn't happen with me. The next day I didn't really have enough stubble to warrant another morning shave. I was impressed and decided that this was a razor worth getting to know, if for no other reason than for special occasions where a clean shaven face is preferred for an extended time. I am still working at it 2 weeks later and I still get great shaves but ease and comfort during the shave could still be better. I don't get any irritation as a result of the shave but it takes some care to make sure of that.

People have said that it is not a "daily driver" and that may well be true, but it shaves well enough that I don't feel terrible skipping a day in between.

The head especially is beautiful, it seems built to precise tolerances, the blade never seems to need to be adjusted, just tighten and use.

I find the handle much too light and have at this point switched it out to a much heavier SS handle with good results.

I am glad I bought it, I would absolutely recommend it. Time will tell if it becomes one of my favorite shavers, but it hands down produces my favorite shave.

I had heard a lot about this razor, particularly how aggressive the older model is. I don't like paying a lot for a razor I'm not sure of, so searched around and found one for a bargain. Like some OC razors, I found it to be a rough, scratchy feel while shaving. It mowed down the whiskers admirably, but I felt a little used by the end of the shave. I don't get that feel from Gillette NEW OC razors, or the Sheraton or Pearl TTO-OC, so not all OC razors feel this way to me. The R41 did (and I guess there's a debate about whether or not this is an open comb). I've generally reserved it for those days when I've got a few days growth and I need a quick BBS shave.

This beautifully made and finished razor looks and feels good in the hand. I usually swap my razor handles for a heavy and long stainless steel handle, but I liked the original Grande handle so much on this one that I left it as is. The grip is perfect, even when wet.

When you put in a blade, it is perfectly centred with symmetrical positioning and quite a bit of blade exposure. The Muhle blade the razor came with is a rebranded Personna.

On starting to shave with the R41, you can immediately feel the extra blade exposure (compared to my normal EJ DE86) and it reminds you to use a light touch and no pressure due to this razor's reputation. For me, the original light handle helped me to do this and get a BBS three pass shave with no irritation.

This is a razor that rewards concentration and a light touch with a perfect shave. I suspect the blade exposure will mean that I can get more performance out of the sharper blades with it.

I highly recommend this as an efficient razor for the man with a tough beard who wants a close shave.

Edit: This razor just keeps getting better and better the more I use it. I think that because of the extra blade exposure and its reputation as a "beast", I'm being more careful than with my EJ DE86 and it's actually helping to improve my basic shaving technique.

Not to sound like a sexist old man but I equate this razor on par if memory serves me right, to being with a young beautiful virgin whom you are trying your best to win over. You need to flatter her with proper attention, be gentle, and act patiently
throughout and listen to what she has to say. If you do that and are a little lucky maybe you'll be well rewarded.
This razor is sort of a "beauty and the beast". It talks to you
and gives you good feedback if you apply the same principals as above....
and reward you with a marvelous shaving experience.

Nice razor, well made, it is a little light. This razor is very forgiving and not very agressive.

I bought just the Muhle R41 head and put it on a Razorock bulldog handle. Though it could be used as such, it is not the ideal razor for me to use daily due to the level of concentration required during the shave.

In the hand, the R41 on the RR bulldog handle feels comfortable. This razor requires good technique and attention to angle and pressure. Pay attention and you will be rewarded with an amazingly close feeling shave. Any lapses in technique will be punished by weepers almost immediately, or you will see them very soon after applying alcohol based aftershave.

I have any number of DE razors I can use to get perfect shaves with, but those are my work-day razors and honestly they can get somewhat boring by week's end. So on days off, out comes what I think of as my "challenge razors", and within this group resides the R41. These are razors that require me to think, pay attention and are fun to conquer.

With the R41 I feel the blade throughout the shave, particularly at steep angles. Maintain sufficient pressure to keep the razor in contact with the skin and be ultra careful about exceeding that pressure. ATG passes should be limited and I also avoid long, sweeping strokes, preferring instead to use much shorter, deliberate approaches.

The R41 is not for everyone and should not be considered by those without a good working knowledge of the fundamentals of DE shaving. But if you're like me and like the occasional challenge, the R41 fits like a glove.

Note: In the "Grip" rating category of this razor, I am not rating the stock Muhle handle, since I purchased only the head and used a RR bulldog handle instead.

There are mild shavers. There are aggressive razors. There are straight razors. There are Samurai swords.

And then there's the Muhle R41.

I have the newer (post-2013) version, which is supposed to be less aggressive than the older one. If so, I wonder how the older users survived the experience.

Now I'm no wimp or newbie here. I've got a Merkur slant in my rotation; I'm fond of the Gem Micromatic; I use a Futur regularly -- you know, the one that exposes the entire blade, corner to corner. New long comb, New short comb, Phoenix open head, even a pair of straight razors -- I've shaved on the wild side and lived to tell the tale.

The R41 puts them all in the shade as far as terror goes. It is a razor that will challenge you every inch of the way. Buff at your own risk, fella.

It's hard to know how to rate this razor on any scale. Is a "10" for aggressiveness good, or bad? I rated it a "1", mainly because its aggressiveness is like a loosed pit bull with an attitude. It'll come right for your throat. I believe in kindness to animals, but the R41 ought to be chained up and starved into submission.

It's not that it's a bad razor or badly made. Somebody had a vision here. It has an interesting look. The quality is quite passable, the price very fair, it balances well in the hand, it's easy to control, it's a standard 3 piece as far as changing blades goes.

I think there are two issues going on here. One, it seems very difficult to find an appropriate angle for the blade. The head curve is steep, and too high of an angle and the blade misses your face altogether. Too low, and it's just being pulled edgewise across your face. Just right is hard to achieve -- and when you do, you realize the second problem: at the optimal shave angle, the blade is sticking out of the head, not encased in it or shielded by it. Really, the result is like using a blade on a stick.

Having said all those nasty things about the R41, I have to admit I still use mine. It's a challenge. I've rarely escaped an R41 shave totally unbloodied. But it makes shaving interesting, and when you get it just right -- just. right. -- you can get a really close shave out of it. Just make sure that your really close isn't below skin level. And novice shavers, please, please, PLEASE steer clear of this one.

To sum up: I can't in good conscience recommend this razor. And I recommend that every experienced wet shaver try it.

I just spoke with a Muhle Company sales representative directly and he assured me that there is no "R41 2013" and that there have been absolutely no changes however, minor since 2011. I'm confused where people are getting the "2013" info. Input appreciated.
