Penhaligon's Opus 1870

Price- This is kind of relative in the respect that if you really like the Penhaligon's line of scentss $100 for 3.4 oz is a lot, but certainly not exuberant. I bought the 3.4 oz bottle and this will last me for years to come.

Quality- This company and the fragrance are top notch!

Packaging- Nice study thick box that I keep the bottle in at all the times. The bottle that Opus comes in is kind of plain however. I think that's what I like about it though.

Scent- I'm not good at describing scents, but it smells very sweet and woodsy to me. It's very intoxicating and SWMBO absolutely loves it. That in and of itself deserves it to be a 10. It's got a nice cedar and sandalwood hint to it.

Staying power- This can vary from person to person and I get varying results between different fragrances in the Pen's line. This one, however lasts on me 10+ hours and even longer. It just keeps going, absolutely amazing and makes it even more worth the price.

Atomiser- I don't know much about atomiser's, but it delivers an abundance of juice per spray.

Go buy this you will love it and so will others around you.

To me it's funny how some people find this fragrance modern, subtle and sophisticated. To me clove, rose and pepper reminds me of my old aunts and their sachets and closets.

Now, why I care is that on me L'Occitan lasts all day, Opus 1870 disappears in a few hours.

Not a review but had to jump in with a comment.

It is very interesting. I have both and my experience with lasting power is completely opposite - no matter how much L'Occitan I put it goes away in less than two hours while one spray of 1870 stays almost for a whole day.
Only L'Occitane that stays somewhat longer on my skin is Cedre, others just poof away very quick.
I did not see myself as a cologne guy; everything I had tried just seemed too floral or too citrus, or too oriental. I tried decants of many of the standard houses and then tried a sampling of all of Penhaligon's. Opus 1870 was the one for me, sensing pepper and musk or cedar. Loving a scent is clearly a personal thing. I love the complexity, the start and the finish. One spritz lasts all day for me or one in the evening is still strong late at night. It is expensive, but I feel like I am getting what I paid for.

I'm a big fan of Opus 1870. Right off the bat, I get blasted with black pepper and fermented tobacco. After an hour, it settles in to a nice dry cedar. I liken the whole experience to sitting in an old, aristocratic humidor. Love it!

Disclaimer: While I am a big fan boy of this fragrance, after having a 100ml bottle for a year, I concluded that it was just too rich for me and traded it off for 100ml of Blenheim Bouquet.

Recommended!
I also enjoy Opus 1870 but from the very first time I put it on, I was struck with a nagging sense of familiarity. Had I smelled this before - and where?

After playing around, I see that Penhaligons describes the frag as:

Head Notes
Bourbon black pepper, Yuzu fruit, Coriander

Heart Notes
English Clove Rose, Cinnamon, Incense

Base Notes
Cedarwood, Australian Sandalwood, Ciara wood, Musk

OK, call me crazy but I think the accord I get from this has a close relative in L'Occitane's L'Occitan EdT. Users on Basenotes describe L'Oc as:

Top – black pepper, bergamot, lavender
Mid – nutmeg, cinnamon, anise
Base – tonka bean, cedar, “burnt wood”, musk
(expanded list from L’Occitan)

Similar in many ways. Now, why I care is that on me L'Occitan lasts all day, Opus 1870 disappears in a few hours. Also, 100ml of L'Oc runs about $46 and is easily available.

I like Opus 1870 - but I bought L'Occitan.
I love this one. Opus 1870 is my day-to-day scent (I sometimes shake it up with a few others, but Opus is my normal daytime wear scent). This one, while pricy, smells so great. The top notes are very spicy black pepper. I especially love the dry down which is cedar wood while the pepper sticks around to add spiciness that makes it smell almost edible. Rose and clove aspects add a TINY amount of sweetness, but this scent is mostly a pepper and cedar fragrance. Smells like wood crackling in the fireplace. Very nice, very masculine.

Very VERY nice.

Love this stuf, not as much as my Trumpers Sandalwood but still love it.

Everything about this stuff breathes "Quality" the packaging, the atomiser staying power. Everything. It is however a tad expensive.

But seeing as I've had my bottle for over a year now and not even a tenth is gone.....I don't mind as much.
I really like the scent, and most importantly, so does SWMBO. I usually don;t get into the base, head, middle notes because, to be honest, I don't know what all that stuff means.

It is expensive, but it is really good cologne.

This is one of my favorite colognes. I get mostly black pepper, and some clove and rose undertones, with a slight bit of cedar. It does have a British smell to it, which I've normally taken to mean its a cologne you want to get a decant of before purchasing.
