Cyril R. Salter Luxury Shaving Cream- Sublime Citrus

I've been slowly using a tub of this stuff for the past month or so.

Price: At about $18 a tub, it's not the best price per tub. However, with Salter you get a 200ml tub as opposed to most other companies' 150ml tub. In this fashion, the cost per ml is similar.

Quality: Overall, quite decent.

Scent: In the hugely YMMV world of shaving, this is one of the creams that can best be described. It smells like grapefruit with a little bit of lemon oil. If that sounds like something you'd enjoy shaving with, then the scent should suit you well. I like the scent, but probably wouldn't use it as an everyday cream.

Latherability: This cream is quite thin compared to any other I've used, and as such I tend to use a good bit more of it per shave. However, once it's in the bowl the lather comes relatively quickly and easily.

Efficacy: The cream is quite slick and very cushioning. It compares favorably with the best of them. I don't have particularly sensitive skin, but after a while my skin gets a very slight tingle with this cream. I'd imagine it's because of the citrus content, but perhaps if you've got sensitive skin this won't be good for you.

Moisturizing: Never had much of a problem with this.

Packaging: The blue tub that it comes in is similar to other manufacturers tubs, but I find that this one isn't quite as good. It seems to not seal as tightly as some other brands.

Thanks to Phil! I must say this one of the most natural smelling lemon products I have ever smelled whether it be a cologne, aftershave, or shaving cream. Top notch and great value from Cyril Salter.
Based on the reviews to date I had been looking forward for my delivery from Phil at Bullgoose. I got it and yes it did smell as described by others. When I went to use it and swirled my Shavemac silvertip and then to my face it lathered but it was just OK. Nothing compared to ToBS or Trumpers or some of the less expensive creams like Ingrams. The shave itself was good. nice moisturizing properties, smooth glide of my Mercur Classic with a Lord's Platinum blade in it. So no complaints there. I guess my expectation of the latehr was that it would have been thicker and creamier. Oh well.

Price: The price is quite good. It comes in a jar bigger than most for just $18.

Quality: Very good. It is definitely a luxury cream comparable to TOBS, GFT and T&H

Scent: The scent was ok. Sort of a mixed citrus fruit. I can smell some grapefruit, orange etc. It almost gives of a tangerine type of scent.

Lather: The lather exploded in my mug. It was rich, thick, creamy and cushiony

Packaging: I got it in a sample from bullgoose, never seen the full packaging

Overall: Quite a good cream. I would consider purchasing it. It was quite refreshing to open my sample and build lather. However, I prefer the mint over the citrus.

I received a sample of this and the mint cream from Bullgoose Shaving. Because it was a sample I rated the packaging and price as N/A. I have used these creams for a little over a week.

Scent: Opening the sample container, the scent is really great, not over powering at all, very mild. It reminded me of zesting lemons, limes and grapefruit. Once I lathered it up, the scent really faded.

Lather ability: Initially, I had a hard time getting good lather. I switched from bowl lathering to face lathering and the quantity and quality of the lather and the ease in which it was produced with improved dramatically.

Moisturizing Properties: Its summer in Texas, dry skin isn't a problem right now. However, I found the moisturizing properties to be quite good. My face felt felt great after the shave, very supple.

Quality: The only negative thing about this product is that the scent quickly faded for me once I made my lather.

The scent of a product is a big part of my morning shave. I like big bold assertive scents that stay with me through the length of my shave. I realize that once I rinse my face and the residual lather is gone, for the most part so is the scent. If the scent of this product would have had more punch and more staying power through out my shave I would have rated it higher. That being said, I can see myself picking up other scents of this cream in the future because in every other category it performed very well.

I've used other citrus scented creams in the past: IMO, this one in heads and shoulders above the others in terms of scent. Beyond that, the performance is what one would expect when it comes to a quality cream; consistently above average in terms of all 'crucial' areas, e.g. latherability and moisturizing ability.

The price seems pretty darn good: of the three t's, TOB is the least expensive by far...it's precisely the reason why I use it and not the other two well known english creams.... This Salter cream is only SLIGHTLY more expensive, but I believe it shaves better (plus, I prefer the creamy consistency of a cream like this, whereas TOB is relatively firm to begin with). I did a google search and, as others have alluded to, Bullgoose shaving is the least expensive seller of this great item, @ $18.00 per container.

In summation, I loved the stuff. Highly recommended.

Thanks to Bullgoose Shaving, I too am able to try out a couple of the Cyril R. Salter creams.

I must start this out by saying that I am more of a soap and NOT a cream guy, but the greater variety of scents that creams offer makes them appealing. I must also state that having been born and raised in south Florida, anything even remotely citrus or tropical is right up my alley. This slightly lemony, and mostly grapefruity scent did not disappoint.

As far as the ratings go, well I must express some disappointment in the lack of a standardized scale complete with guides to use, and therefore personally chose to use an "8" to express general "correctness" or "perfection" if you will. Therefore "8" is a scale that is exactly what it should be, higher and it exceeds ALL qualities that should be found in the category and anything less would indicate a failing in that category. It also goes without saying that in some areas personal tastes could apply. Also I am of the opinion that some categories should NOT be applied to overall ratings (things such as packaging and scent should be used as a guide to personal choices, and price should be used to gauge overall value and not product quality)

Overall I find this cream to be better than one can expect a cream to be, lathers easily and allows a great range of water ratio to suit an individual's tastes. I loved the scent. Price is about right for a good cream, and moisturizing was also correct, I do not want a product that goes out of it's way to moisturize when it might not be appropriate to do so, but also want a product that does not end up drying as this would be undesirable. Again, overall I would say this is a "keeper" and I would, without any doubt or moments of hesitation, purchase some to add to my rotation, and plan to do just that along with a couple of their other scents. (This coming from an admitted "soap guy")

As always YMMV and all that.

Bob

I also received a sample courtesy of Bullgoose shaving with the condition that I throw a review here, so... here it is. :)

Price: Seems like a very price-competitive product, on par with other midrange creams.
Quality: No complaints here, smooth and consistent in the sample I received.
Scent: Subtle, in my sample, though VERY good. Very natural, not overpowering at all, and lingered throughout the shave. Didn't dissipate on lathering like other citrus creams and soaps sometimes do.
EDIT TO ADD: According to BullGoose, the cream contains no lime - it's grapefruit and lemon oils. Interesting.
Lather: Good. Works on par with Art of Shaving - very forgiving to water amounts, very easy to whip up.
Packaging: Pics look nice. My sample was in a great little plastic thing. :) I'm not commenting on the retail packaging though.
Overall: Good stuff. I might actually consider buying a tub when my den cuts down a bit more. I was impressed.

Phil from Bullgoose Shaving graciously sent ten of us on the board samples of Sublime, and Mint creams to sample.

Price: This comes in a 6.76 ounce container. TOBS comes in a 5.3 ounce container. This costs 18.00 per tub, TOBS costs 13.50 per tub. Doing the math, this costs $2.66 per ounce, and TOBS costs $2.56 per ounce. So there is a ten cent difference between the two, that being considered, this is an excellent value.

Quality: Top notch, performs at least equal to TOBS.

Scent: When I first opened this, the scent was so wonderful, I thought briefly about eating the shaving cream. It needs a warning on the label: DO NOT EAT THE SHAVING CREAM! It's a combination of grapefruit, and lemon scents.

Lather: This erupted into wonderful creamy moisturizing lather, with very minimal effort. Lather easily lasted through my 3 pass shave, with no degradation of overall quality.

Packaging: Sold in a 200 ml/ 6.76 ounce container with a double snap lid.

Overall: This is top notch shaving cream, and I would definitely not hesitate to pick up a tub, or two.....currently I have a huge stock of shaving cream, so I need to resist the temptation to buy....:lol:
