Shaving Brushes (Reviews)

This is a great brush, which can be had for about £10-£12 from various places, including Boots. This is the pure bristle version, but beware, they also make synthetic brushes. It is probably boars bristle, not Badger bristle, but its still quite comfortable. Forget the cheap Wilkinson brushes that you can get in Tesco, they are too hard. These are still comfortable, and are great if you just want to give wet shaving a go, but don't want to spend large amounts of money. It comes with a small...
First let me say thanks to Jim at http://www.vintagebladesllc.com he is a pleasure to do business. Here are some so so pictures of the new brush next to my Rooney Style 3 size 1 Out of the box my first concern was the knot size. This is a 24mm knot and I was afraid it might be too big, but I was wrong. I love the larger knot. My second concern was the loft the Style 3 I have is listed to have a loft of 55mm and the new Heritage a loft of 48mm. I was assuming this meant I...
This is really an outstanding product.... now - by outstanding, I don't mean "good" and it's not just "outstanding" because it is reasonably priced... it's outstanding because it just plumb works and feels better than nearly any/every other shaving brush at ANY price... and hell - it's good looking and comfortable to boot! So what makes this brush so special? Well - before we go there - i'd like to first address a rumor that Savile Row shaving brushes are made by Shavemac... well are...
I got mine with the Faux Ebony #550 handle. This brush is excellent for the price. Tons of lather with no effort, 23mm knot. I picked mine up for under $70. This is one Hell of a bargain. In my experience, nothing in the price range holds a candle to this brush. I've been using this brush exclusively for almost 3 months now, and I have lost maybe 2-3 hairs. Excellent craftsmanship and well-built; feels like it should last forever. Lather just EXPLODES from this brush with no effort. Add...

Well, following the old adage that a picture is worth 1000 words, here is my 23,000+ word review. Total Height - 88mm Handle Height - 41 mm Bristle Loft - 47mm Knot Diameter - 23mm Comparison Pics: 26mm Shavemac, CH1 in Best, PJ3 in Super Top view In looking at the bristle tips, you can see that the PJ3 Super has definitively whiter tips than the CH1 Best. That being said, if you look at the bases of the two brushes, they look identical in color. After...
Okay, having shaved with both versions, I can post a review. The VLB is a variable loft brush that has a base that turns to extrude the brush head at variable lofts. There was a V1, which had some problems of sticky turning and jamming, and the new V2 which I review below. V2 (see pics) is quite different. Basically there is a brush on a plastic plug, and this plug threads onto a big metal screw inside the brush handle. The mechanism turns with a ball bearing race, which appears sealed...
I am doing this comparison partly because Plissons don't often get reviewed, partly because there has been a lot of discussion about bristle quality variation within a single brush type -- often associated with Simpson's super grade brushes. I don't mean the small differences that are inevitable in a natural/handmade product, but major ones that can completely change the character of a brush. I have two Plisson 12 HMW brushes. One was purchased from Atkinson's of Vancouver about a year ago...
Disclaimer: As I have only a handful of brushes to compare the Major with, none of them travel brushes, I feel I am not quite qualified to give a real compare/contrast-type review. I'll do the best I can with the experience I do have. Price: At $130 for Best and $150 for Super this is a relatively expensive travel brush. The Vulfix turnback is about half that price, but the equivalent Plisson travel brushes are more, if I'm not mistaken. It's not the most expensive travel brush out there...

I've been playing and over the past month picked up these three brushes. The C&E was a challenge. The store in Atlanta showed it on the computer but it wasn't there. The salesman called all over and located one in DC and had it shipped to me (Free). It arrived in 3 days. Beautiful and consistent with the reviews. The pictures show comparison shots with the C&E @22-23mm with a great bloom. The Tweezerman @ 20-21mm performed well and is a very respectable brush for an incredibly cheap $10.00...

Got this and been using it for a while, so I now have enough info to post a fair review of it. A small knot and long handle was the combo I was looking for, and this brush delivers. Tips aren't rated as soft (6). It's a skritchy pure badger. If you want soft tips, get a different grade of badger hair. The transparent handle is a nice touch, gives it a real modern look. Would get some comments at the gym if you shaved with it there, I imagine. Pros: Nice long handle for...
For those starting out, don't buy the Art of Shaving shave kit for the brush. It is garbage. I can't believe Art of Shaving (quality brand?) would put their name on this brush. Granted its dirt cheap but buying crap at a low price is still a bad deal. I think I used mine about 5 times before it lost all its hairs...joking. No, I used it about 5 times before I got tired of picking badger hairs off my face and razor. Wait to invest in a quality starter brush ~$75? Since its a good one you...
I purchased my Caswell Massey Super Badger brush as an upgrade to a boar bristle brush. Night and day, truly. I had considered purchasing a silvertip badger brush, but this one was right up my alley asthetically and I worked at a mall where I recieved a 15% discount on the brush. Before we begin, it's important to note that my brush is much more full than this stock picture from google. The brush is identical, but they are all hand-made, meaning some are slightly more full than others. I...

First of all, I would like to congratulate and thank all involved in making this brush a reality. On to my personal impressions: Presentation: Brush comes in a very attractive tube. Top class packaging. Smell was not bad at all, a bit worse after soaking but still less than other brushes I have dealt with. Badger: From my first touch, I felt extremely soft tips. Absolutely luxurious to the point of decadence. I think softest I have ever tried. On the other hand, and...
Hello Folks, I have had the opportunity to try one of Northwoods Woodcraft ( http://stores.ebay.com/Northwoods-Woodcraft )'s 22mm knot x 70mm loft Custom Silvertip Badger Brushes. The vendor: This was simply the best packing job I have seen to date from a brush vendor. The brush was wrapped in bubble wrap, placed in a padded and reinforced tube, more bubble wrap, then a padded mailer. My English brushes have mostly come in a box, set in a padded mailer. Much more care and attention to...
Price: At the limited time offering of $110 USD, this brush is a perfect guiltless steal in relation to what you are getting for the price. This brush is designed to last for years of use and the overall cost of ownership for each year is amazingly low! Quality: Joel and John must be Type-A personalities because neither were satisfied with the offering until it met their specs and survived their testing regime. This is a very good thing in the case of this brush because both made sure...
This brush was given to me by a special friendTM so despite my frantic googling, I haven't been able to find any specifics with regards to model number or pricing, so I can't make any judgements on that criterion, but I can say, this brush is a fantastic lather maker and a workhorse to boot, and one of the reasons I was so excited when Edwin Jagger agreed to make our first forum brush. Quality: First rate. I've beaten the holy heck out of this brush for months. It's been my go to brush for...

I had originally gone to Edwin Jagger's website to pickup the discontinued torteisse shell best badger brush. I was going to get this, instead of the Crabtree & Evelyn version, since it was the same price, but I had heard the actual Jagger brushes were better. Unfortunately, they had run out of stock, so I was offered instead to get their ivory colored handle, for the same price. My hat's off to their customer service. This is the first and only brush I have owned. It makes a good amount...
Shavemac #441 Silvertip This is my first Shavemac brush. I choose it because of Shavemac's reputation for quality and the aesthetic beauty of the faux ebony & nickel handle. The knot size is 25mm and the center loft is 61mm. The price was $129.20. The handle is relatively small at 41mm but has a comfortable feel and secure grip. The metal base adds considerable heft to the handle and provides good balance to the brush when lathering. The hair is very dense and maintains it's...
This brush came about as a recommendation by Lee. I purchased my PJ2 Best from Lee back in early summer, and the man is on top of his Simpsons! Very affordable, The Duke 2 is seldom mentioned on the forums, so I was excited to give it a go. Quality: The overall construction of this brush is fantastic. There is the worry of the label falling off, but a coating of nail polish eliminate that concern. The faux ivory handle is smooth and seamless. There is not glue showing at the base of the...
