Beer Review: Duvel

Item Description

Beer: Duvel

Style: Belgian Golden Ale

Label Info: 8.5% ABV. Pilsner malts, Bohemian hops and a unique yeast strain... Enjoy chilled (under 50*) in tulip glass. Bottle conditioned.

Brewery: Duvel

================================================== =========================

Glassware: Chouffe Tulip

Pour: Bright, golden. Thick head, nearly half the glass. Slowly breaks apart in to large foamy icebergs. Lots of tiny carbonation.

Nose: Spice and grains dominate. Sweet fruit... maybe apple?

Taste: First thing that jumps out at me is the yeast. Grains again, wheaty. Very crisp. Some fruit, sour apples maybe lemon zest... Mouthfeel is great, slightly less bubbly than champagne. Halfway through I'm getting some strong malt notes. No hops yet to speak of.

Finish: Very, very slight bitterness. Very clean and fresh.

Overall: Extremely light, yet very complex. You could drink this and very easily consider it merely a good 'session' beer for a hot summer day, but if you sit down with it and really enjoy it, a whole slew of flavors and layers of complexity make themselves shown. Very subtle and VERY good.

This style of beer is far from my favorite, so don't take the below rating lightly, this stuff is so good it makes 5.5 even though I don't enjoy the style very much.

Rating: 5.5/6 Beer Mugs. Classic, must try.
