After much use and comparison, I am not quite sure why this is referred to as a beginner's razor. If I were to try to teach a beginner wet shaving, I believe I would let him start with my closed comb Muhle before I would hand him this Merkur HD 34C. The razor shaves very very close and in fewer passes than the Muhle. I have to pay more attention to what I am doing and hot try to shave too fast with this razor. The plating finish is not the smoothest and is not without blemishes here or there but there is no question it is a well designed, effective shaving tool. I do not consider it a beginner's razor. A very close shave with fewer passes than most other razors.

Pros: Great beginner razor. I learned how to wet shave with this razor
Cons: After about 6 months use the screw broke of the head of the razor.
Was a great razor until the screw broke off the head.
