Recently ordered 2 refills (or so I thought) on Amazon cause the price was a couple bucks lower than usual (for Canada), and I figured if I get tallow, great, if I get the new one, I at least get to try it.

Both arrived as the tallow formula AND as the puck and bowl combo. Immediately ordered 2 more, lol.

I received my bowl of Tabac (it's the tallow version). I've never used Tabac before. I'm concerned the smell could be overpowering; it's more overwhelming with the foil covering the soap than my bowl of TOBS sandalwood soap!

Is there anything I should do to prepare for the use? Maybe remove the foil and leave it in the air for a week or so?

Also, will the scent of Tabac really not wash out of a brush? I have a new SOC Cherry badger that I intend to use for SOCtober. Will using Tabac mean that my brush will forever smell of Tabac? I really don't want the brush to smell like any one soap (or have its scent linger in the brush's hairs).

Don't worry, Tabac is a rather "overscented" soap when it is new. With time and exposure to the air, the scent tones down considerably. To experience this first-hand, take the soap puck out of the jar and leave it in the open air in a garage or utility room for a week or so before you start shaving with it.

The scent is much less strong when the soap is lathered and used for shaving. It's just an old-fashioned barbershop scent, really. Your brush will tend to smell like whichever soap it was used with most recently. It won't be forever "tainted" by the scent of Tabac. You can also just wash your brushes with Dawn dish detergent occasionally.

I think that a synthetic would be less likely to retain the smell. Water penetrating the natural hairs would pull in the aroma with it. Since synthetics don’t it my be less likely to retain the smell

I only have one synthetic; it's not a SOC. Since I already agreed to join SOCtober (because I'm really enjoying using my new SOC badger), I won't be using my synthetic.

On the bright side, as I removed the foil to air out my puck, the scent changed and I found myself liking it. I doubt I'll be bothered if my brush does end up smelling like Tabac. Well, that is until I stop using Tabac. At which point I may have to wash out my brush.

Everytime I check this thread, I crack up at "Tabac is whack". Not sure why I find that so funny but I do.
