Eversharp Schick Injector

I'd like to buy one of these online, what should I look out for? I've seen some listings on ebay where the seller claims they are functional but I've read some won't hold a blade as they should and its difficult to tell from pictures.

Is it just a gamble I will have to take?

My very limited view…
You can still find NOS razors so no worries there.
If it’s used and a blade is still in this is a good sign as it tells you:
a) it holds the blade
b) you can replace it with a new blade without damaging it - the old blade saves the edge of the new blade that could otherwise scrape along the bladestops.

I would simply advise buying a cheap used one with a blade already in place. Check photos carefully. I did this (bought a Schick Type J on the Bay) and had no problems at all. It cost me only £8 GBP including delivery (around $11 US).

As far as I know the RAZOR will not be damaged if you insert a blade into an empty razor. But doing so would likely damage the blade as you say because it would be dragged over the end stops. Many people talk of a ‘sacrificial’ blade in this scenario - one blade is not a big loss as others have said. At the kinds of prices basic vintage injectors command on the Bay, I would personally take a gamble - but if in doubt maybe but from a seller who specialises in shave gear.

If the razor does not look bent or damaged you are probably okay.
To clarify, I made this statement in regards to examining a razor for purchase. It is extremely difficult to damage a razor while inserting a blade.

There are also some Etsy vendors who specialize in razors and state a razor to be shave ready. You usually pay more from these people but you have some assurance of what you are buying.

Hard to tell from the pics if that one is twisted or not. Otherwise a good cleaning and good to go. I’ve installed a blade into an empty Schick injector with no problems, but for the price of blades I would recommend just sacrificing one. If you’re concerned about buying used from an unknown source like the bay you can keep your eyes open on the BST forum here on B&B. I love mine. Great shaver.

Thank you all for taking the time to help me. I actually found what a vendor who sells nothing but vintage wetshave gear is calling a G1. It looked good from the pictures with no signs of corrosion or rust and he claims it's fully functional with no mechanical issues what so ever and never needed a repair. He also claimed it's been cleaned, polished and sterilized. I also ordered some of the Chinese made Schick blades. Both should arrive by the first week of August. I'm sorry if I broke any forum rules by linking to that auction, I will delete if I did. Thanks again for everyone's input.

Here are the pictures from the injector I purchased. I paid $22 U.S and the shipping was free. I feel like it was a fair deal. Not sure what to look for but it seemed nice to me and consistent with other pictures I've seen of G1 injectors

I have this exact razor. You will NOT be disappointed. The blades you ordered work well also. It is a smooth and forgiving shaver as well, on par with any of my DE razors.

My two cents: older Schicks are much better shavers than newer. An E, G or J will provide outstanding shaves. L or later, not so much. I’m not saying the later razors are bad, they’re just not the absolutely fantastic tools as their elder brethren. Probably the best choice for a novice is a G; best combo of aggressiveness and ease of use. And it has that classic Schick look.

With a type G, I or J, you will be very pleased. I have an E type as well, they shave a bit rougher.
Pair it with a Schick blade, and big chance you will never look back. Have fun using your Schick injector! I wish they would still make them, but luckily they are pretty easy to get hold of.

I will definitely report back on my experiences. I've been watching a few videos on YouTube of guys shaving with the G injectors to get an idea on technique. Are there any resources or videos any of you recommend for me to watch?

I have a genuine Schick injector and a few of the new copies. In truth, I really can't see a lot of difference in the quality or comfort of the shaves. They all do an excellent job. It amazes me that more people haven't discovered the comfort of an injector razor.

It seems like most beginners to wet shaving are recommended new or vintage DEs. Sometimes people recommend certain new models of SEs but rarely if ever recommend vintage SEs or injectors. From what I've read it seems like most new comers to wetshaving should try injectors before anything else. Everyone says the shaving style is much more like a cartridge and more intuitive than working to find the correct angle with a DE. I've been getting very good close shaves with a Dorco PL 602 with Feather blades. I have given myself some razor burn at times from having difficulty finding my correct cutting angle and using a bit too much pressure. I had the same issues using cartridges whether they had 2 or 5 blades, often got razor burn in the exact same areas trying to get a very close shave. I thought about getting a heavier DE but after reading how many experienced wetshavers with substantial and expensive DE collections prefer the Schick injectors and think they are better for beginners, I had to find one. Can't wait to give it a try.

Re: razor burn, try to resist the urge to go over the same area over and over, especially without lather:

Thanks, yes, going over an area too many times because my angle wasn't perfect and using a bit too much pressure because I used carts and now use an ultra light weight DE is what causes it. I'm always after a super close, perfect shave and that has backfired on me at times. I really am working on easing off the pressure and perfecting that angle and not overdoing my problem areas.

The shaving angle is built into the head design so keep the top nearly flat to your skin. You chose a nice razor and the price was very good. I have been using injectors since my teenage years and have no regrets.

I have in my collection type O, M, G1, E2, E3 and D. These are wonderful razors that give a perfect shave. The most favorite razor Schick Type E2.
