Mistura May Madness

I'd buy the Semogue Mistura now, but I'm desperately trying to successfully complete a shave-purchase sabbatical for the first time. A few more days and I will tie my previous record of 5 months.
:thumbup1:
@Atlantic59 is correct; the cap on the original tube failed and the contents were transferred to the tub. I specify "tube" in my posts because there is a difference and I want to make it clear the cream being used is from a tube and not the tub
Aha! Got it.

Being simple minded, I just assumed that you'd uploaded the wrong pic.

For the last 8 days I have been using Razorock XXX Fresco instead of my standard Palmolive. It's good soap, and the small surface area for loading works really well with the 22mm Torga C3 Mistura, which I used today. I would say the Mistura almost makes it great soap, creating a dense, sheeny lather in short order, but it still doesn't measure up to Palmolive. That Torga, tho!

Oh this would come beautifully together as Tabactober/OCtober/SOCtober
For me:
1 soap
tons of razors with the FOCS taking center stage
and the Trinity for the brushes

A few members here have been including cool little knick knacks in their photos, I remember one always having a small bunny in theirs and the airplane above... thats kinda neat! Are there stories behind them? Or just what it is?

I think it’s mostly a personal note like the little pug. I also got some Casino dices to number the shaves per blade but I keep a journal anyway so lately it’s just a plain pic of the setup.

Brush: Semogue Torga-C3 Finest Mistura 22/49
Croap: LEA Mentholated
Razor: RazoRock SS Lupo 95 head on Phoenix aluminum handle
Blade: Personna Red (2)
ASL: Spearmint BLAST (home brew)

A very good shave... after changing handles.

My brand new Lupo 95 arrived this morning. (Thanks for the link Al @AimlessWanderer.) I was very pleased with the look of it on its HD handle; not so much the weight though. When I started my shave I couldn't believe how off-balance it felt. I like "head heavy," so with the loaded head being 28g and the handle 73g it definitely wasn't to my liking.

Two minutes into the shave I rushed out and rescued my Phoenix aluminum handle from my beloved Yuma head. The Phoenix handle weighs 22g. Night and day! What a relief! I then proceeded to have a very good shave.

I can't say it was love at first shave, like my Yuma, but it was really good (after the handle change) so I'll give it a few more shaves (at least) to get to know it better.
The minty soap and ASL came as a bit of a shock, but a pleasant one. :osage:
And of course, my Semogue Mistura continues to be the best brush on the planet. :001_wub:

Happy shaves guys. :cornut:

Fumbling about.
This brush was given to me by a very generous member who wanted me to try the Oumo mistura knot. I like it.

Ian's Oumo Mixed.640.2-17-21.JPG

On the bottom of the handle are three notations.
  • Pro-phy-lac-tic (that's the brand I think)
  • Set in Rubber (all caps actually).
  • Sterilized Made in U.S.A. (all caps).
The handle looks too small to me, but ergonomically I like it a lot and visually I also like it.

The knot is nominally 24 mm. It measures with my calipers at 26 mm with a loft of 50 mm.

Here's how it looked right before this morning's shave.

I believe these Oumo mixed knots are the same knots as those sometimes sold by Maggards. However, it might be a little less scritchy than my other Maggard mixed knot which is a 26 mm (nominal size) bulb.

Neither compare terribly well with the Semogue Mistura in terms of overall softness and perfect balance of qualities, but I like both of my Oumo/Maggard knots well enough. I rather prefer this knot to my 26 mm bulb. All three of my mixed knots perform well, but the Semogue is top of the heap.

All three are leagues above the Omega Mixed Midget in my view of them, but it is still a lather monster albeit scritchy as all get out.

Happy shaves,

Jim

Is there any long term Mistura user in this thread? I wonder how the Mistura is going to behave -say- after a 100/200/300 times of uses...

Hardly "long term," but 66 shaves (plus its original prep [and an additional cleaning session—just for the hell of it]) to date.

I'll admit that it has got a little bit softer. I assume that's just down to the boar bristle tips splitting further.

To me, barring that little bit of softening, performance and feel from "out-of-the-box" till "now" are the same... i.e. OUTSTANDING.

Paging Cal @Cal...

He's already responded and has roughly the same number of uses as me.

I'm not sure how many times I've used the Mistura. I'd guess maybe 50 or 60 times (maybe more, maybe less). I've noticed the knot change over time. It was great to begin with, and it's only gotten better.

Surely someone has used the brush at least a hundred times. I, too, will be interested in what they have to say.

Happy shaves,

Jim

Thanks, Jim.

My cherry wood handled Mistura has a count of approx. 50/55 uses, too. Once the initial stiffness faded, it started to show its regular characteristics (soft tips, balanced backbone)... I do hope that basically this won't change with continous use.

Edit: checked my statistics.

I've had my SOC Mistura in Taj resin since February of 2019. I used it exclusively for a couple of months when I got it and in frequent rotation ever since. I'm sure I have 150 or so shaves on it. Here's the best I can do in terms of general impressions of its journey in my den:

Shaves 1-5 - Makes and releases plenty of lather, but a tiny hint of scritch along the lines of a brand new Shavemac Finest
Shaves 6-20 - Still makes and releases huge volumes of lather, and all scritch slips away gradually, as it does with a new Shavemac Finest; however, this thing has more density and backbone than my Shavemac Finests and approximates the best versions of Simpson Best I have encountered (including my old Somerset Polo, to which this very favorably compares). Sometimes the glue bump annoys me.
Shaves 21ff - I know exactly what I'm getting every day: no scritch; good backbone; huge lather; easy lather release; ergonomic handle. It hasn't changed much at all after that first month, but I've gotten to know it and do not find any trouble with the glue bump (in fact, I think it helps a bit with lather release). It feels like a Simpson Better Than Best.

Actually, that's damning it with comparisons. It is its own thing. The boar bristles have more presence than Best Badger. The backbone doesn't come via extra density, so there's never water or half-formed lather trapped in the heart of the knot.

It is, for my tastes, the best brush I've ever used. The only thing that comes close is the Torga C3 Mistura, which may indeed surpass it after I know that one better. I've had short-term brush fixations over and over again, only to find that after a while there's some flaw or annoyance that ruins a brush for me. The SOC Mistura, on the other hand, has remained my favorite brush for the entire time I've owned it.
