Gillette Tech Home Replate

A week ago I got an old Tech that had lost all of its original finish. I think it was originally gold based on the one or two spots where it still remained. Well, while bumbling about the internet, I came upon an instructable for diy nickel plating and figured I’d give it a go. Pretty pleased with the results.

I should have taken more before pictures, but by the time I thought of it, it was too late.

This is the instructable I found, and more or less followed the instructions. I used a 5v phone charger rather than the lantern battery the author recommended. It was one from the era of all the proprietary plugs, so good it could be used for something. Also didn’t have any cameo, so used barkeepers friend right before each bath.

Also, I found that 10-30 seconds didn’t accomplish all that much, so it was more like 3-5 mins per bath. Lots of them. If I were more organized, each part probably would have taken an hour? Maybe more? But I was all over the place, at least at first, so took much longer.

That's great and it looks simple enough for someone like me to do it. My flat bottom Tech and brass Old Type would definitely benefit from this.

I don't have any sources of nickel handy. I'm wondering if I could use a regular nickel coin since they are 25% nickel and 75% copper. Think that would work?

I don’t think that would work, but I don’t really have extensive knowledge of plating. I just ordered nickel anodes off amazon. Think they were $10

Nice !
👍👍

How thick is the plating would you estimate? Was it thick enough to cause any issues with the threads?
