Safety Razor Acquisition Thread.

EclipseRedRing

I smell like a Christmas pudding
I am almost embarrassed to post this after seeing some of the recently acquired razors in this thread but here is my latest. It is a German Rotbart Mond Extra in nice condition after a gentle cleaning. It appears to be a single ring clone and I estimate 1920s. It is in what I think is the original metal box which has a small amount of red coloured decor on the outside but is otherwise solid with little in the way of interior fittings.

Here it is next to my single ring for comparison, it feels every bit as well made, if not better than the Gillette.

I like the engraving on the handle which reminds me of the Eclipse Red Ring. As usual I had already shaved when it arrived, as we all know that is one of the universal rules of shaving 🤣👍

Over the weekend I lucked into 2 1st generation Aristocrat combination sets not yet in my den. Both share the same mid-thirties case with with the diamond logo and blue/purple interior.

Firstly: A 1936 silver version razor with nickel head/collar (it seems from seller pics). This is my first early “Pre-#15” as the cognoscenti calls them :thumbup1: . Easily recognizable by the silver plating and the non-winged blade tray. This razor needs a little TLC but will be quite fine, I hope, but it will not be pristine.

The second set is already that, though: An immaculate later rhodium set not needing anything, almost looks NOS :001_tt1:. Thanks so much, you-know-who, for pointing me in the right direction. I will think of this always as E.’s razor!

Regardless of its provenance, it’s a beautiful razor! The question, of course, is how does it shave?
Old types are good shavers. I think Mr. Gillette got it right from the beginning. On further research, I now think the box and blade bank are from a Federal set. I have decided to take the razor at face value and call it an old type, which looks like the handle has been repaired. Still, it is a nice little outfit that should give good shaves.
