What's new

Post your local/flea market stone scores. (There's none left. Tim found them all.)

Well...I was antique shopping with my wife and found this guy. Looks like a 6” mounted in box. Amazing you can look for years and then suddenly find two rarities in 24 hours

Nice finds. Well now you know how to save that label on the other one. Just use this one.
Quite the interesting luck! This was my thought as well.

Does anyone have any idea when these stones may be from? All of the info i can find so far seems that they're Pre 1932, which is when pike and norton partnered up? Or when norton bought them out? But other places says that Norton and pike had been partnered up for advertising before this.

Pike and Norton partnerd up in 1909 and by 1915 pike bought out Norton to be solely owned. In 1931 Norton buys Berh/Manning from Pike. In 32 they join again and by 34 Norton buys Pike. Pikes woes came from two fires and the bad economy of the time.

Found two today, one easily identifiable, the other not as much. The one is probably some sort of slate or something, and has layers that may have to be sanded down because the “smooth” side is a bit rough. They were both cheap enough though to make it worth the gamble.

"Look what I found"
An Arkansas variety pack. A 10 inch soft, 8” Trans Hard and a 8” Washita. I am starting to see more contemporary stones, Smiths, Indian Mountain, Arkansas Natural and such lately. I been passing on them but can’t leave a 10” in the wild

No flea markets, antique shops or estate sales, this hunkering in place is rough but not as bad as being sick. But a text from one of my pickers was all I needed for a HAD fix. Three contemporary Arks, a 6” Hoffritz soft, 8” Smiths hard, and a 4” A.O.C. translucent. The cherry on top is a 7” coticule. All that is a nice score but driving home, stopped at a yard sale. Pick up a mystery state. 7 x 3 x 1.5 inches of goodness

Thanks Brothers. I hear the cry of rescue from the stones. Am I now the stone whisperer? Even in a lockdown, they found me.

I've always wondered, do you buy stones you don't want off your sources just to maintain relationships with them? To keep them eager to find and snag stones for you, so you don't miss out on the ones you do want? Do you have as many piles of carborundums and queer creeks as I do?

Yes, no, and maybe, it depends on who I am buying from and where we are in our relationship. I try not to buy what I don’t want, but sometimes to get the best price, we play “what the price for the whole lot”. There are tool dealers I buy from that have a market for synthetics. They have buyers that will only by a India or Carbo over a natural. So what I leave behind will go to someone else. To start a relationship, if a dealer purchased bad, as I educate them I will buy that out of a bad buy at what they have into a stone. I do have a pile of Carbos and Q Cheeks but not overwhelming. I don’t mind buying a old Pike Q C if it has a nice label and especially if it a “use sperm oil” hone. I have purchased some crappy synthetics over the years only for the wooden box they are in. Just put my No 1 Coti in a fab deco case (perfect fit) and the stone that was in went to the trash

Not my biggest or baddest, although a good find. Now the the apocalypse is taking a time out, I went to a estate sale. Asked for my usually thing including stones and told there is nothing like that here. I heard that thousands of time before so no big deal. So a walk thru the house looking for any gems I might find. I get into the living room above the tv, and what do we have here, what is this I see?!?!

I ask how much for the box and stone? Was told $. I said that would be good but would be better if you throw in the clock. So away I go with both. I got a nice stone and the clock went in the junk box
