Used a Feather Blade and lived to talk about it

Feather. I wouldn’t use anything else.

Improving the neck shave. Blade chatter, angles and atg.

I struggled with my neck until I switched to a SR. No issues since then. If you don’t want to make the switch, the following techniques may help. Stretch the skin, ride the cap, go slightly but not fully against the grain. Sharp stiff blades like a Feather AC blade in a Vector help too.

What Did You Learn From Your SR Shave Today?

South to North on the neck is no problem with a SR. I used to struggle with neck irritation with my DE. That has been resolved after switching to SR but I’ve still gone easy. It turns out that I don’t need to. South to North is no problem and my neck is BBS. If I ever attempt a fools pass I...

How much $$$ is too much for a straight razor???

I offered someone a kidney once for a prestine Tortoise Shell MK32. That offer still stands.

Still in Payday has come and gone and still no purchases or desire for any more gear. Feeling quietly confident of finishing this month.

What are the benefits of a high-quality strop versus cheap generic ones?

I’ve never had the pleasure of trying a Kanayama but have thought about getting one. Westholme uses Horween Shell Cordovan and I find it very good. Is be interested to know the difference to Kanayama’s Japanese Shell. I understand he offers various leather thicknesses.

What are the benefits of a high-quality strop versus cheap generic ones?

Like most things it’s a matter of diminishing returns. The difference going from an $8 eBay strop to an $80 Tony Miller Horse Hide is huge. Better hardware, better leather, real linen, better length, better finishing. You will get a better edge and the experience will be more enjoyable for...

    Gifting a knife....edge care?

I thought that I would do the same for my mother in law. Her knives are always bunt and she is always impressed by how sharp ours are. I bought her some fancy knives, a knife block, and honing steel. Soon after the knives were all dull again. I honed them up and explained how to look after them...

    Custom Lather Bowl

In my view this bowl is ideal. 4 1/2” diameter and 2 1/8” tall. I’m not into ridges or bumps. A textured glazed would be a good feature. You want a rounded bottom going into nearly vertical sides. A flared lip works well.

February 2021 Gentlemanly Restraint Until Month End (GRUME)

Still in Working on getting the new brush smell out of the Classic 1 SiLVERTiP this week. This brush was intended as a travel brush and hasn’t seen much action yet due to the lockdowns. It turns out that it’s a m very capable home ground brush as well. It knocked up a great warm weather SMN...

    Does speed matter?

I believe it does matter. I’m currently playing with faster strokes. Not super long strokes but quite fast. I think it works better than going slowly. The shave is closer and more comfortable when you commit to the stroke. Of course you have less opportunity to pull back so you may want to save...

    Real tortoiseshell scales?

Once you’ve seen the real thing it’s easy to tell. The giveaway on the Kirinite is the shape of the colours. Too square and too patchy. Here are a few more real ones. It has a beautiful gloss to it and is quite dense in the hand. Probably the most beautiful material in nature. Unfortunately it...
