A newbie, a Muhle R41 and an alum bar: how to yodel for dummies

I admire your courage! I don't think I would have wanted to try the R41 at such an early stage :001_smile With that said... When I got the R41, I was determined on shaving with it at least ten times before deciding whether to keep it or get rid of it. I have now used it exactly eight times and...

A little advice for newbies like me... and a couple of interesting questions...

Other people have already answered your questions, so I won't reiterate what has already been said. However, I wanted to make a quick comment about your experience with the Goodfella razor. I received my own Goodfella (black) last week, the third razor I own - the other two being a Feather AS-D1...

    My excellent experience with Goodfella

I just did my second shave with the Goodfella, using a new Feather blade. Compared to the first shave with the Timor blade, I got a much closer and more comfortable shave - if this isn't a BBS, I don't know what is. I had started a thread before about my thoughts on pressure: basically, I...

    My excellent experience with Goodfella

I honestly believe that the problem with the handle was an oversight. Everything had been packaged properly and arrived without damages during shipping, which can only mean that the handle was defective before it was sent out. I tried the razor for the first time last night. Obviously it is...

    My excellent experience with Goodfella

Last week, I placed an order for a black Goodfella safety razor, directly from goodfella.com. I received it yesterday, after 8 days of (not so) patient waiting. I immediately unpacked it and I was still admiring the tiny handle (side by side with my R41 Grande, it looks like a toy), when I...

    Irritation after using alum bar

Gene, thanks for the feedback! After reading all the responses, I think I figured out what I was doing wrong and what I should do differently. First of all, that area of my neck has always been a little sensitive, even when I used to shave with cartridges. Second of all, I had recently shaved...

    This just in...!

I completely understand your fascination with Cella: the first time I opened it, I was really tempted to eat it. Every time I shave, even when I use Proraso, I have to take a whiff of Cella :wink2:

    Irritation after using alum bar

Sounds like I will have to try witch hazel, after all :001_smile

    Irritation after using alum bar

The main reason I switched was that I got tired of ingrown hairs, but I also used to have a very hard time with those spots with cartridge razors. I can't ever get a BBS shave there, either, but a DFS yes. Since I am still relatively new, I have been using a variety of blades and I agree that...

    Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellows Didn't Pan Out.

For what's worth, I also have a very good opinion of the yellow 7 o'Clock - when I tried it in my Feather razor, it worked very well. As far as Aspirin making weepers more likely... I don't really think that there is any correlation. If anything, it might take slightly longer for bleeding to stop.

    Irritation after using alum bar

I would LOVE to do that, but here in Singapore, cold water isn't really that cold... I would have to get a bowl and put some ice in it, or get it straight from the fridge. Maybe I will give it a shot one of these days - thanks!:biggrin1:

    Irritation after using alum bar

Then that's probably it, since the irritated spots are where the beard grows in those swirly patterns you mentioned :001_smile I guess I have to accept the little irritation I get with the alum bar or settle for a more comfortable but not as close shave.

    Irritation after using alum bar

I tried without the exfoliant (I used a very mild one, so no difference there) but not an alcohol-based splash. The red patches are always in the same 2-3 spots, every single time. If the problem is my technique then I must conclude that, as bad as it might be, it is remarkably consistent.

I believe it is a Shavemac, actually - that was what Rudy told me he'd use :001_smile
