It is, in all honesty, better with straight razors due to it being so slick. That was the intent when it was formulated. The original line makes a dense and creamy lather with more slick than you can handle... Not some billowing cloud of foam. Happy Shaves!
The only problem with using the method you mention is that the glycerin in the soap is a humectant. Once you "release" the glycerin from the binder it will separate and attract loads of water. You'll end up with an incredibly slick and lather-less cream.... Ask me how I know. Haha!
You can find a 4 pack of my original line on Amazon for great prices. I dont offer soap through Amazon but many retailers do... Sometimes you can snag a 4-pack for dirt cheap. So cheap in-fact, I wonder how they do it. Haha!
The Col. Conk name on the tang dates yours to about the mid 90's.
The later design (like the one shown with the logo on the blade itself) and solid red scales dates it around 2000-2006. We had many of those in stock and they could have been sold all the way up until 2014.

Nice score! If it has the translucent red scales that makes it at least 8 years old. That color was discontinued some time back. An excellent razor with a little hone work. It will no-doubt serve you well!
