What do people think of cast steel + Restoration

Restoring this razor, it definitely had a duller sound to it. It's a small (I presume 5/8ths, I dunno I haven't actually measured) yet hefty blade but I've restored enough to tell the difference. It's about a 1/4 hollow but other 1/4rs I have done had a higher pitch to them. If it's convenient...

What do people think of cast steel + Restoration

Very interesting, thanks I could be completely making this up but when you mention steel and France in the same sentence didn't Benjamin Franklin have something to do with early steel formulas when he was ambassador to France? I always wondered about the "warranted" and and just assumed it...

What do people think of cast steel + Restoration

Yeah, I just meant it's very different to the typical razors we all usually deal with. When sanding it it was much more "powdery" if that makes any sense.

What do people think of cast steel + Restoration

Interesting. Why wouldn't a makers mark be on this razor? Mass produced? The lack of a maker makes it impossible to date unless someone else can chime in.

What do people think of cast steel + Restoration

I didn't include a pic of the back. The pitting was so deep I had to leave the remaining bit. It's barely noticeable (about 1cm left of center) so I just poured boiling water over the blade and left it alone. Need to hone it at some stage as I'd love to hear others opinions on cast or if...

What do people think of cast steel + Restoration

Reconstruction but this time no collars used, just 1/16 brass pins. No internal washers just like I got it. I could probably give this a bit more sanding, looks fine IRL though. Quite a wedgie profile, this'll be a quiet razor. There's no edge on this at the moment, that'll be another...

What do people think of cast steel + Restoration

What are peoples general thoughts on cast steel razors? Good/Bad, Advantages/Disadvantages. How they hold their edge. Rust compared to high carbon. Etc. I bought this pig in an auction recently and, being my first cast steel, didn't really know what to expect. Overall poor condition blade...

Quick Filarmonica 13 question on pins

Not sure if this is directed at me or Legion? For me it depends on the collars being used, if there are collars involved. As the collar I used on this razor was very small I believe I used about the diameter of the pin. I don't really think about it and do it by eye. If I was not using a...

    Revisiting the barber hone.

But with razors splitting hairs is the only important thing (sorry, couldn't resist)

Quick Filarmonica 13 question on pins

It's just normal paper masking tape, this one is about an inch thick and marketed as tape for "Cars" when painting. I cut a strip approx the length of the etch and used a Swiss army scissors to trim it to the shape of the etch which is a lot harder than it sounds. It's important to use the...

    Coticule mining in 1971

This was primitive old skool stuff but I found it fascinating. You don't really need them but you can get auto translated subtitles if you want. Check out timestamp 16:07 for 4x48 coticule goodness (Yes that's 4 inch X 4 foot coticules)

Quick Filarmonica 13 question on pins

It's all in the little details. If I didn't fix them I'd remind myself every time I picked it up. I decided to do something new and a little strange with this. I said to myself your next shave has to be with this razor. That, of coarse, meant it had to be finished. It's been 5 days growth...

Quick Filarmonica 13 question on pins

All back together again. I'm very happy with how the melted scale problem turned out, you wouldn't know it was ever there. Also happy with how the Lyre turned out, it is more pronounced now yet still looks appropriately aged. Bevel set on Shapton Kuromaku 1.5k Narutaki Mukaida Japanese...

Quick Filarmonica 13 question on pins

Peening Time As per the original purpose of this thread I'm using a nail style pin to do this. 4x4 Jewelers anvil and dampening block with polished peen hammer. The two yellow squares of paper in the bottom right are 2 layers of post-it note to cushion pins while peening. A shot of the back...
