Cross Country Move! Need advice.

So here's the story. I'm moving from Montana to South Carolina in a couple of weeks. I'll be driving my '93 Toyota pick-up that has nearly 230,000 miles on it :blushing:. It made it out here last winter from Georgia and has been across Montana several times since, so I'm hoping it's good for at least one taxing adventure. One of my old roommates from college is flying to Denver to meet me and complete the road trip. Has potential to be one of those great adventures we both talk about for the rest of our lives. Here's hoping (and praying)!

Our plan is to leave Denver and head West (yes, West) to Lake Tahoe, where our other roommate from college lives with his wife and half kid (his wife's due in March, I think). We're going to take it slow through Cali, since I've never been there, and see Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks (I majored in parks and recreation in college, and these are of particular interest to me) as well as the Pacific Ocean, which I intend to touch for the first time. We have another friend in Vegas, whose house will be the stop after all of that. From there, we're turning east, perhaps......nay, probably stopping to see the Grand Canyon, and then heading toward Atlanta. From ATL, I'm only a couple of hours south of home, where I'll stay for a few days before heading to Georgetown, SC (the one on the beach) to start my new job.

So, I have a couple of questions for those of you who live on that route or who have traveled it before.

1 - How much snow should I expect to see from Cheyenne, WY, through Salt Lake City and Nevada to Reno on I-80?

2 - I haven't decided on which interstate on which to travel west from Vegas....well Flagstaff after seeing Grand Canyon, I-10 or I-40. I-10 would add some mileage, but I would be sure to stay out of snow. East of El Paso, I'd hit I-20 toward Dallas.

I-40 would be shorter, but I don't know how far south to expect snow through Arizona and New Mexico. 40 goes through Flagstaff and Albuquerque. Either route will eventually bring me to Dallas, where I'll follow I-20 the rest of the way to Georgia. Any input here? I can't decide if seeing Phoenix and El Paso and not having to worry about icy roads is worth the extra mileage.

I had a nightmare of a drive coming out here. I ended up having to drive across the entire state of South Dakota during a blizzard to make it to my pre-service orientation on time. I HATED it. I can put up with a little snow, but less is better, IMO.

Thanks for any input y'all have, fellas.

I've driven around AZ and NM a few times, but I don't have much to offer in terms of help.

The snow in Flagstaff isn't much to worry about, IIRC. I doubt that you'll see much snow in Albuquerque. Like AZ, the snow is more due to altitude in NM, so unless you're going up through Santa Fe, Taos, or any other "ski valley" towns, I don't think you'll have any trouble.

That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I didn't know whether Albuquerque was similar in elevation to Santa Fe and Taos or not. I've never been there. Thanks!

Now if someone from the Salt Lake City area will find this.........

Weather and road conditions can get dicey in a hurry this time of year along that corridor. The weather guys at KSL.com can/will get you both current and projected weather conditions if you have internet access. Also, just PM me and I'll give you my cell # - you can call me a little bit before you're in the area and I can get online to give accurate weather help. Also, check with my motorcycle buddies at utahvtxriders.com - we've got riders all over the state. Just sign up for free and start asking questions; lots of good people there(I'm wilsondude or BTF there - my name is Mark).

Wow, thanks a ton! I'm leaving a week from this Friday, so I'll do that for sure.

I used to live in Arizona. In my opinion, I don't think you'll have any problems with Flagstaff. Driving through the mountains is pretty the first time you do it, then it's just a pain in the *** every time after that. On the bright side, you won't be going through Sedona. Just be prepared for Semis going about 35 trying to climb the mountain.

The semis I can deal with. It's the ice I'm not crazy about. No no real problems with that on I-40 through AZ?

I don't envy you at all. Too much driving for me.

I'd be psyched out of my mind about it if I had a more reliable rig and was doing it in the summertime. I love driving, and, God willing, I'll get to see a lot of the country I haven't seen yet. My goal is to visit all of our nation's parks before I turn 40......well, I just added that "40" part just now. I just want to do it before I kill over. :001_tongu Anyway, I'll be well on my way after this trip.

I like the 40 through NM idea - let's you take a short detour to visit Bandolier. Enjoy your trip!

That sounds like a great idea! I just found a conflict, though. I have some friends in Silver City, NM who I was going to try to visit. I didn't realize it until just now, but that is pretty far south. What to do........???

You ought to check out the utahvtxriders website - there's several of us who have logged a few thou on roads all over the West/Midwest on motorcycles. I hope you have a great adventure; lots of beautiful country to see. My riding buddy is a great road/tour guide; we've been all over - if you want I could get you in touch and he could give you enough ideas to keep you busy in the West till Spring!! Damn, now I wish it was a little warmer and we could give you an escort!!

 An escort would be fun were it not for all the cold. I don't really need too many more diversions. We're stopping over in Tahoe to ski with a close friend for a day and then in Vegas with another friend. In Cali we're hoping to see Yosemite, Sequoiah, and perhaps Joshua Tree National Parks. We're on a bit of a time line, so we can't add too much more. :wink2: I could play out west for the rest of this year, and I would if I had no responsibilities waiting for me. :w00t:

My brother used to live in Tahoe. He is a pilot for AA and flew out of Reno when he was there.. but going down the back of that mountain is rough in the summertime, I would be worried how it is in the winter. I can't help you with this, but it is worth looking into... Good luck and have FUN!

Keep a journal... Might make a good screenplay..."Sideways... The Sequel"
(I want Executive Producer credit)

:lol: I'll see what I can do. The guy that is doing the trip with me actually started up a production company of sorts. He mostly does videos for weddings and things of the sort, but we probably could really make a movie. I doubt it would get anywhere if didn't have some big names attached to it, though.

Thanks for that, Mama Bear. I'll give my friend in Tahoe a call before I head that way and get some input about that from him. I was a little concerned about that area already.

Don't get depressed if you don't reach your goal...just reset it.:biggrin1:

The Driving is a @#$!@ Project? Starring Bubba, Bubba Jr. and host of other American Rednecks!:lol::lol:

"If we can make it out of trailer park, there'll be no stoppin' us! What're we drivin'?"

"The El Camino."

"The El Camino?! That's like the Cadillac of cars!"

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Maybe I'm more redneck than I thought! I really do have a soft spot in my heart for El Caminos. The early 70's SS is high on my list of desirable cars....er....trucks.....er, um....how do you classify those things again?
