Last night’s decadent shave
RazoRock Super Slant Lvl 3
Bic Chrome Platinum (1)
Damp washcloth aka “shave binky”
AP ShaveCo Cashmere 30mm synthetic brush
Pre-shave: hot shower plus glycerin and more water
Lather: Wickhams 1912 Club Cola Soap, face-lathered
Aftershave: Ulm Nom
Post-shave: face wash with shave binky
Post-shave: Mentholated Equate moisturizer

I thought my sinuses were mucked from playing with the shovel in the snow too much the other day (using an elliptical in a cold basement did it a few weeks or so back), but then I got an achy fever last night. Fearing carp, I swabbed my nostrils with a home pathogen test kit and I’m testing positive for COVID-19. Whee! At least I feel good enough to work today.

On to the shave. I didn’t interrupt the shower to scrub with soap. All the steam! Was hoping most would be in my airways and mebbe on my face, but I think most of the water vapor adhered to the bathroom mirror. Used my favorite and most comfy brush so I’d feel better and had a fresh Bic Chrome Platinum in the razor. Aside from a few weepers on my right upper lip and the smallest amount of curled back whiskers under my left jawline, it was a calm experience. Well, there was more random aftershave sting, but everything was cool and calm after my face wash.

Had to reschedule an appointment with a specialist for a few months (very depressing) and need to call my regular doctor to see if antiviral meds are right for me.

Have had two regular shots of Pfizer and one booster and currently have smell/taste, so those are good signs.

Happy shaves, everyone
Heal soon! 🤞
Smooth shaves

Take care, get plenty of rest, and don't forget to put the lime in the coconut!

Hope you mend quick my friend!

Rest well Thom, and I hope you feel better soon. If you end up taking the antiviral (I presume you're taking about paxlovid) it's quite effective, though the metallic taste in the mouth cannot be understated. I am relieved that my present infection seems mild enough that I haven't opted for antivirals (I qualify as a former smoker). I hope whatever corona flavor you're fighting is similarly easygoing.

Thanks again, gents. Got the paxlovid and took the first dose this evening. Each dose is three pills so I feel like a rockstar. Just lost my sense of smell. Will miss the lemon Pledge scent of the Wickhams Club Cola.

Took tomorrow off for an unrelated medical appointment, but that’s now rescheduled for late April. Fortunately, I have plenty of water to drink and cartoons to watch on my day off. 👍

Lather: Wickhams 1912 Club Cola Soap, face-lathered
Aftershave: Ulm Nom
Post-shave: face wash with shave binky
Post-shave: Mentholated Equate moisturizer

Another weeper or two on the upper lip, but… …I couldn’t smell it coming!. Also, already exfoliated it plenty with tissues.

Aside from that, nice shave. Maggards brush worked its magic on the Wickhams and the blade happily chomped away stubble.

Happy shaves, everyone!

This morning’s decadent shave

Pre-shave: hot shower plus glycerin and more water

Was too tired to shower last night. Had the Karve brass Overlander ready for a comfortable, sleep-walking shave, too. Went unconscious before all of that, so I showered this morning and used the RazoRock Super Slant Lvl 3 and a Bic Chrome Platinum on its third use?! #excalibur

After the uninterrupted shower (the reason the shave was decadent and not merely luxurious), I used warm water during my shave. Didn’t like it. Wasn’t too, too bad, but the post-shave feels slightly irritating. Went WTG on upper lip to avoid weepers there and succeeded. Tried a little ATG on it, too, and was also weeperless.

Of course, a very small weeper at the base of throat and slight irritation at the sides of the neck below the sideburns dampened an otherwise excellent shave. Cooler water next time.

Happy shaves, everyone!

Fumbling about.
I enjoy the copy churned out by Phoenix. They are good at selling their wares in my opinion.

I like their splashes and mostly use 'em, but Scentless is my first CK-6. I wasn't wild about the non-CK-6 soap I bought. (I liked the soap okay but not the scent, and it's a scent I generally love in the splash version; CK-6 is a much better soap in my opinion, too.)

CK-6 comes in a bigger tub than some soaps. Certainly not hard or triple milled or anything like that, but the CK-6 5 ounce container seems to be lasting a decent amount of time, but is money really much of a factor here. I have boxes of shaving soap I don't use.

CK-6 and the Cube have some common ingredients but certainly aren't the same thing.

The Cube can be lathered up with a brush or by hand and used as a shaving soap. I've done it, as a silly experiment.

Interesting how we think about price isn't it? Sometimes we do. Sometimes we don't.

I truly love MdC other than the fact it dries my skin terribly. I won't use it again. (Unless I forget that little fact.)

I think maybe I've used one of the vegan WSP soaps. I know I've used their tallow based soap, but I had a love/hate relationship with it. Certainly it was a very good soap, but the point at which it was hydrated enough for me was too close to the point at which the lather fell apart and ran down my chest and belly.

Canada Shaving Soap looks good from what I've read of it. I like the simple formula (at least in theory), but CK-6 has for me post shave and all the other qualities at a decent enough price. With shipping Canada Shaving Soap is $55. I assume that's Canadian dollars but still!

I've also been using Shannon's Soaps in their unscented/NIL. Nothing wrong with it, but I like the CK-6 a lot more + my SS tub doesn't have anywhere near the amount of soap the CK-6 tub has. I've forgotten the SS price with shipping.

Also, I have on hand more than a kilo of Vitos Red Cocco. The way I leave the chunks out before using them it's unscented enough for me. I like it as well as anything else and better than most including some quite expensive soaps and Vitos is dirt cheap (or it was).

Just to be clear, I'm not touting any of these soaps. In my opinion there are a bunch of soaps worth using. Most of the soaps I've tried have been good with only a few exceptions.

The Cube/Tube rocks! It makes a huge difference in my shaves. I've tried a number of other preshaves most of which have been pretty decent, and worth using, but not in the league with the Cube.

As far as I can find the Scentless CK-6 soap is currently unavailable except in sample size. Good thing I'm not running low. I'll grab one next time I see it in stock though.

Happy shaves,

Jim

It occurs to me I should use MdC again. Here's why.

Many times I've thought that my evaluations of soaps have been colored by my preshave products and routines for as long as they've been part of my shaves which seems to be since mid January, 2022.

On another forum there are guys talking about Canada Shaving Soap as very drying to the skin. One of them says he's an amateur soap maker. He says the formula of CSS is inherently drying.

It's not drying in my experience of it, but I'm applying preshave extra glycerin and various fats which change the lather and the way the soap works.

The most drying soap I've ever used was Murphy's Wool Fat. I used it exclusively for a good while. I will never use it again having tried it not too long ago. Horrible for my skin.

The second most drying soap for me is MdC. I will use it again though, maybe today. I'm pretty sure I've tried it with my current preshave products but not entirely sure. Probably I could search my posts and find out, but I've mentioned MdC a lot, and not used it a lot in a long time, perhaps not at all with my current preshave products.

I think maybe I've been unfair to MdC in that it might be fine for me combined with the other stuff I use every day. It's also fact that Canada Shaving Soap could be drying for me without the other of my daily products. I'm not planning to remove from my daily regime products which work.

Jim

I use zero pre-shave products but have naturally oily Southern Italian skin. Neither Canada Shaving Soap nor Martin de Candre is drying to my face.

It would be very interesting to see if your pre-shave routine is able to balance out the drying effect that CSS and MdC soaps have on your skin.

BOSC Science at its finest. ;)

CSS with my preshave products is not drying to my skin. I'm not willing at present to test CSS without the preshave products. (I'm having enough trouble with dry skin, from the weather and the indoor heat.)

I know MdC without the preshave products is drying to my skin. I will test MdC with my usually preshave products. I'm betting it won't be drying, but IDK.

Thank you for revisiting your previous opinions and for making plans to reevaluate them in the context of your current skincare regimen, Jim.

If I had the knowledge and a safe place to mix my own batch of a CSS-like product, maybe I’d share a portion of our multi continental soap maker’s opinion of that soap and MdC. In related fields, I eagerly read his evaluations on synthetic knots and subcutaneous shaving.

Last night’s decadent shave
RazoRock Super Slant Lvl 3
Gillette Nacet (1)
Damp washcloth aka “shave binky”
RazoRock F-400 XXL 34mm synthetic brush
Pre-shave: hot shower plus glycerin and more water
Lather: Wickhams 1912 Club Cola Soap, face-lathered
Aftershave: Ulm Nom
Post-shave: face wash with shave binky
Post-shave: Mentholated Equate moisturizer

We remedied two malfunctioning appliances in our home a la The IT Crowd yesterday (we tried unplugging them and plugging them back in) including the washing machine that wasn’t properly draining for two months. I didn’t suspect it needed a wee reset until it started its sequence by magnetically locking the lid instead of filling with water. Not needing any extra spin cycles was raw hedonism.

On to the shave. The Gillette Nacet feels gentler than the Bic Chrome Platinum, but gets the job done just as well. Maybe better. This RazoRock Super Slant Lvl 3 razor is unnerving in its required mindfulness and addicting for how gentle it is to most of my skin (got careless with my raw philtrum and had a weeper there, but otherwise so gentle). The other RazoRock performer; the F-400 XXL brush; worked the Wickhams 1912 Club Cola into a superb lather.

Only one more night and morning left on the Paxlovid medicines. Hoping the side effects are only the ones I’ve noticed: bitter, metallic aftertaste and mild, slightly unpleasant feelings of being Tommy Chong.

Happy shaves, everyone!
