Gillette Skin Shave Gel Review

Chandu

I Waxed The Badger.
So previously Gillette came out with a line of products called Pure. Now they have a new line I ran across in Walgreens (Minnesota). I'm not sure if this is on national rollout or not. I can't find it on their site. I do find it at Boots which is a UK retailer. The ingredients of the Boots sold product is slightly different.

So I ran across this the other day and feeling adventurous decided to give it a whirl.

TL/DR - give it a pass. No better than any canned foam perhaps a bit slicker.

I showered and then shaved. Wet my face, squirted a little dollop into my palm and then rubbed my hands together making the gel into a foam and then spread it on my wet face.

Simple two pass shave WTG, ATG as I commonly do. The gel is nowhere as good as I find the Nivea Sensitive Cooling Shaving Gel, not as slick, not as good smelling and not as good of a feeling post shave. The Nivea is VERY protective. It's slick and thick. I always like slick. Thick is not so important as I can adjust the razor accordinly.

Anyway back to the Gillette. This product is targeted as an Ultra Sensitive gel. So I'm rather surprised it has any fragrance at all. But what it does have is enough peppermint oil to either make your shaving a York Peppermint Patty or wondering just what you'd shave for a Klondike bar. Either it's a strong peppermint, or I dislike peppermint shaving products in general, but i find it horrible on the face. Almost a burning sensation during use. Got my shave done and rinsed thoroughly.

Post shave similar to any bog standard canned gel or foam. Leaves me feeling a bit tight skinned. If it's for ultra sensitive skin, I'd expect a bit better. Gillette's Foamy or Regular Barbasol leaves my skin feeling the same. Barbasol Orange actually feels better than this.

When I first saw this I thought it was a rename of Pure, it's not. Here are the ingredients.

Conclusion: Avoid. Any common canned foam or gel is as good performance wise. Any Barabasol, Gillette or Edge product is as good and can be had for less money. If you have sensitive skin I would go with the Nivea or better yet Schaf. Schaf will leave you feeling like you were actually nice to your skin.

Schaf? Yes, I really need to do a review on that. It is a brushless dispensed in a non foamy cream. Similar to Cremo. It is truly made for sensitive skin and not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. It's three times the price of Gillette's crap, but it at least is made for sensitive skin and walks the walk.

Barbasol was a mainstay back before I found all y'all and yer enablin' ways...
For canned foam these days the Orange is really good and comes in a travel size. The 1919 is a very good brushless as well, but I've been enabled too.
