What's new

Great American custom straight makers??

Thank you everyone for your help on this one.
The Max Sprecher razors seem to have come down in price a bit and whilst lovely looking things may have to wait to buy myself one on a special birthday.
Osiris, so different! I love the the use of copper in his new blades (i have a thing about copper, being a plumber and have 3 razors with a copper theme already) Unfortunately i don't do Facebook so don't really know how to contact him.
From what I can see, Portland razors seem a bit basic for the price they are charging. Nice looking but nothing to writ home about.
Brian Brown, great prices and they look good. If I was only looking for a day to day beauty this is where I'd go.

Looks like I may have a dabble with Osiris for my next Christmas present. The copper will go well with my existing small collection. The only problem is that I have no idea how to contact him as I don't do FB.
Once again, thanks for all your help and if anyone has an email for Osiris that would be even better.

Here's an "American razor", and a look at Instagram at the same time - Two flies with one stone, so to speak.

Next, Joe Edson:

I don't think there is a particular American style. However, you may want to look at some vintage American makers, such as Case or Robeson, for instance. When I think about those, I think square points, double shoulders..

Maybe some barber notches on full hollows? Super usual.. Here's an example (apologies for the rather esoteric images - it's a Wade&Butcher Improved tang, made for an American retailer, it's 6/8" wide)

If you do speak to an American maker, ask them what they think. I'm sure they will be able to help - hopefully some of their inspiration is rooted in the national history, too.

Love the look of the Edson. Any idea what they shave like?

Quick update, I've been PM'd by a couple of people and whilst the blades look great his service leaves a lot to be desired. Customers quoted 6 week delivery on custom and still yet to receive 6 months later.
Oh well, I'll have to keep looking.

Not American, but European custom makers that I can recommend is Rigarazor (you can find them on Etsy) and Koraat (Search for koraat knives on Google). Never seen a bad review of either, and you will save a lot on shipping and customs.
Rigarazor favours heavier grinds. Custom made hand forged straight razor Rigarazor | Etsy - https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/928520880/custom-made-hand-forged-straight-razor?ref=shop_home_active_1&frs=1&cns=1
Koraat any grind you prefer. Home - http://www.koraat-knives.at/english/
Both of them offer basic models, at reasonable prices but if you want something really special, you can go for silly money and spend as much as you want.

Yes, that’s my razor. It’s a Blue2 core (Aogami) in iron cladding with a nickel shim, Smiling Odin’s Edge style. A great razor, that holds an excellent edge. I would recommend him in a heartbeat, for the customer service alone and the way he stands by his products. I’ve been fortunate enough to try 5 of Joe’s customs.

I have a Shavesmith FOR BARBERS USE and an Osiris...they are both neat blades and fun shavers!

I would caution anyone considering buying from Christopher at Shavesmith. I ordered in April 2019, as still have not received anything in Feb 2021. Christopher stopped replying to all requests for updates...

Oh my! I bought mine on the second hand market. Sorry to hear that your order didn’t work out.
