What's new

Coticule love... show off your rock

I have like 38 if I had to guess. Thing with me is they have already been through years of vetting and purge cycles so most of them are all deep end stones, be it performance or being deep endnin other ways such as being completely featureless visually, or huge, or boxed/stamped.

This new one made me want to go dig out my other really heavy 5 x 2.5. This one is almost 700g, but it is also thicker by a considerable bit. I think it may have been one of those truly colossal stones at some point given the one irregular end. I really need to reupload pics of all the ones from the photobucket days because some of these are awesome...

They had no idea a coticule the size of the original would be so valuable today or they never would taken a saw to it.

The bottom was fairly similar with a bit more of the layering peeking through. I polished the sides up to a dead 3k sheet. The thing feels like it is a piece of coticule shaped bakelite to hold.

Two Cotis added to the den. A 7 x 2 and a 5 x 2.5. The seven is soft with a muddy feel. Generates swarf with little effort. The 5” has reached the end of its life. Someone got there money out of it. It will end up in the orphan BBW box waiting for a new mate

I bet you can lap it and possibly still have an 1/8” left that would last quite a long time if the stone is fairly hard.
Start lapping with a really coarse abrasive and the closer you get to the finish line move to a finer abrasive so you don’t remove any more than you really have to as you reach the finish line.
Myself I would have to know whats waiting at the end of the tunnel. 😛

It would be put to better use just using the bookends for slurry production

Thanks for the support but it’s life honing is over. I pictured it’s good side. It already had a blowout on the far side. It will not be missed, it has company with some other same sized rocks. I will lap enough to get flat spots on end to try using for slurry. But the day a orphan Coticule the same size come along, it will visit the belt sander.

Thanks, I will give it a try. I have good luck separating old animal glue my just putting it in the hot Florida sun for a few hours. They come apart easily and let cool till the evening

I had a GORGEOUS 5x2.5 Kosher way, way back when my collection was small. It felt like a Y/G Thuri under the razor.

But... it was dished like this (dark yellow is flat), or even slightly worse. Strongly considered cutting it into a 5x0.75" stone and a couple slurries, but I didn't have access to the right tools at the time, so I just used it as a slurry stone for years and then sold it for cheap if memory serves.

Those dishes are the worst, and probably a part of why I never really got into hand honing.

I understand! I live in North Florida. You have a very nice selection I must say!

Thank you very much. And I improved the 5x5 1/2 collection with another local find. It was from the estate of a barber who passed in 1974. Been in a box ever since until last week. It is in as found condition, but it has a feel, the feel you know when you feel, that is has above average potential. A natural that has a shimmy, shimmy, loop-de-loop of the yellow thru the bbw that smiles at you. Very cool. This one jumped to the top of the lap and use pile

I exchanged the "unusable" schist for a piece of wood that's more useable. I carry it around alot so it's more pocket friendly, and feels nice between the fingers. Now it's got a lower base too which is nice.
