Safety Razor Acquisition Thread.

Got fascinated by this American 1940s adjustable: The Berkeley 3-piece razor which were also sold under the Doehler-Jarvis brand (and possibly even as a Cooper).

I know nothing of it but tracked down some raving reviews of the shave which stated that the fixed shim really works great. So thought I’d try it!

En route directly to Chris Evatt for a replate as we speak so I am in for wait until I try it out :popc:

I've always heard the 34/51 heads we're the same. Yes no?

To be honest I do not know but superficially the two I have look very similar although the 34 handle is longer and thinner. Here they are together:

I can confirm that if I take the left top cap shown above and put it on the right hand razor then it is too loose to shave safely. The right hand top cap on the left razor is fine. You cannot mix and match the parts as they are different diameters and will not go together. Perhaps I have misidentified one or both razors. I sure do like them though - dare I say better than Gillette? I think I just did 😃

I acquired this Fatboy from a B&B member sometime around Christmas. I then sent it off to North Shore Razors where Scott disassembled, forwarded on parts to Chris at Razorplate, who plated in black rhodium, sent back to Scott in Maui for reassembly, then off to me for arrival today. I intentionally had Scott at North Shore coat the adjuster dial Cerakote black so I can paint the adjuster numbers different colors when I get the itch. You may see this razor in the future with red, green, blue or yellow numbers? I am in the 2020 Sabbitical, so this was my last purchase in 2019 and if successful, will be my last purchase until 2021.

That's pretty sweet, Thomas!

Very cool, Thomas! - I am too thinking about that black rhodium of Chris’... Maybe a Rotbart in full clothing? And your idea of painting the numbers in various colors is great!!

No pictures yet, but I just ordered a Merkur Progress and an EJ de89 with the laser 3D handle. I'm hoping that the 3D handle is nice and grippy, and I will be comparing the Progress to my Parker Variant (with and without swapping out the top cap).

Better than a trifecta....a quadfecta find! A couple of days ago I was in a local flea market and found five razors in a booth and I purchased four of them. First of all, I have been collecting for a very long time and finding ONE new acquisition in the wild has been difficult. Four at once?! YES!! Two single edge razors - an Eagle Improved and a Winchester, both with matching blades. Two double edge razors - A Gillette Fat Boy and, although the imprint is worn,
a G. B. Stair safety.

I have examples of all of these in my collection but the Stair was a bit different than the one I obtained years ago. Another thread on this forum discussed the Stair razor and my first one came with a broken Neillite Four Hundred head. This latest one has a head with similar material but no markings whatsoever. Also, the example with the Neillite head has a series of close vertical lines on the handle while this latest acquisition has horizontal, spaced rings.

A good day of finds!

Thank you gentlemen. As you know, the Fatboy isn't the greatest shaving razor, but I like the idea of a custom razor that I can tweak from time to time with the number dial colors. Chris at Razorplate is a treat to work with as well!

1928 New Improved in the New Standard presentation. No serial number, New old stock, Complete with shipper. Slight damage to the shipper and the ever familiar crack in the handle, small but stable. This will be my first razor set that has the shipper. Very cool find. Hard to believe it sat for the last 92 years!
Thanks for letting me share!
