"Remember, remember
The 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot.
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot."

So the verse goes. On this day in 1605, Guy Fawkes was arrested in the cellar of Parliament, near barrels of gunpowder. The Gunpowder Plot was a scheme to assassinate King James I and members of Parliament. Fawkes has been called the only man to ever enter Parliament with honest intentions.

I do believe that quote is/was (possibly) very tongue-in-cheek intended. More like a severe criticism towards politicians than an actual acknowledgement of Guy Fawkes' actions. Even I, a non native English speaker, can get that... [emoji3]

a plot by a religious fundamentalist to blow up a king and several hundred members of parliament (as well as half the Westminster area with the amount of explosives he used ) is not an honest intent.

I believe that "honest intent" refers to his desire to set off the explosion, whereas the politicians who enter with claims of "doing good for the people" end up, well, doing what politicians do . . .

Exactly. When asked what he was doing with that much gunpowder, he gave a rather insulting, but honest, answer.

A man can be honest about wicked intent. The Gunpowder Plot was wicked, but Fawkes was honest as to his intent.

BTW, I've been trying to avoid the religious aspect of this. The Protestant - Roman Catholic conflict in England was very nasty, all around, and I really didn't want to go there.

I’m not a fan

Of course. Is there any other way to read that? Sheesh

November 6

1528 - Shipwrecked Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca becomes first known European to set foot in Texas

1572 - SN 1572 (Tycho's Supernova) is first observed in the constellation known as Cassiopeia. The appearance of the "new star" helped to revise ancient models of the heavens and to speed on a revolution in astronomy that began with the realisation of the need to produce better astrometric star catalogues (and thus the need for more precise astronomical observing instruments). It also challenged the Aristotelian dogma of the unchangeability of the realm of stars.

1860 - Abraham Lincoln (Rep-R-Ill) elected 16th American President

1861 - Jefferson Davis elected to 6 year term as US Confederate President

It's also the day in 1935 that Edwin Armstrong presented a paper on a different type of radio system. It's known as FM. Although it gave superior noise reduction compared to AM, it took decades to catch on.

In 1919 on this day, Arthur Stanley Eddington presented the results of the expedition Brazil to observe the solar eclipse. His results showed the bending of starlight by the sun's gravity, as predicted by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity.

Famous scientists born this day

1867 Marie Curie - Polish-born chemist and physicist. She, her husband Pierre Curie, and Henri Becqueral were awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics for their work on radioactivity. She was awarded the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovery of the elements radium and polonium and the isolation of radium and the study of its compounds.

1878 Lise Meitner - Austrian-Swedish physicist. She studied the nuclear fission of uranium along with Otto Hahn and Otto Frisch.

1888 C. V. Raman - Indian physicist. He received the 1930 Nobel Prize in physics for his work in inelastic light scattering, which is the basis of Raman spectroscopy.

1944 Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President for a fourth term. This led to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution which forbids a person from serving more than two terms as President, or one term if a person served two or more years of a term started by another person. The amendment went into effect February 27, 1951.

Happy 1st day of winter, everyone. What? That doesn't come until December 21, you say? December 21st is the date of the Winter Solstice, and we commonly call that the start of Winter, but such wasn't always the case. At one time, the mid point between equinoxes and solstices, known as cross-quarter days, were regarded as the dividing point between seasons. Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream takes place during the Summer Solstice, and as late as the 19th Century we have In the Bleak Midwinter, which regards the time around Christmas as being the midpoint of the season. November 7 marks the mid point between Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice, so by that reckoning, today would be the 1st day of winter.

The cross-quarter day between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox is on or around February 4. This is six weeks before the Spring Equinox. Interesting that if a ground hog sees it's shadow on February 2, it's supposed to mean six more weeks of winter.

His wife invented some great noodles, too. No one ever remembers her . . .
