2019 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Maltese Falcon Razor

#62 now out after nine months and a day. As I said, temptation was nigh as a couple of brushes in my sweet spot came up on the BST after 9 months of nothing and one is on it's way. OTOH, I've sold/traded more than I have received in 2019, so I'm still making progress towards a smaller inventory of my favorites. I'll be back next year as I have enough stuff for 2-3 years.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo

After a great September with no "outs" we loose an operative.

We survived September and then we lost one :(. Sad day! Stay strong team.

I 100% agree with your statement, but I really just wanted to celebrate 4,444 posts in this thread. I have a huge number of people in my life who claim 4 or 44 is their favorite number so this jumped out at. Wonder how many posts we will end up with.

Sorry for the tangent, back to your regularly scheduled purchase free shaving discussions.

Lucky palindrome? I used Hallows today. It feels like proper autumn now in Massachusetts.

9 months is a good run! I have a 22 mm Rudy Vey with a Shavemac two-band; it's a great brush! You'll enjoy enjoy it.

You can join the group getting ready for the 2020 sabbatical!

I have a 20mm Rudy Vey with the same knot. It is great.

For the record, I did try to trade for a Shavemac before purchasing in order to stay in the sabbatical. I'll be back in 2020. I need another year to reducing inventory.

I found myself under voluntary committal a few years ago after going through the "OH SHINY" phase of wanting to try every new (soap|blade|razor|aftershave|accessory) I read about.
  • There are VERY few truly game changing items in shaving once you find that razor and/or blade that works. I have about 20 straights and use 3 or 4 regularly and those are all pre WWII. I've have two classic DE's (tech and blue) and I eventually settled on Astras for those. I've got travel disposables I won't dignify with a comment. If you like the shave you're getting, you've won that race; quit.
  • There are, for me, a few great soaps and a lot of good ones based on performance in my water. I've got a shoe box sized tub of soaps in the latter category that while I like them well enough to use, I won't replace them.
  • For soaps, scent is nice but secondary unless it's bad (and I don't consider Tabac or Arko bad)
  • I have a problem with aftershaves that stick around past lunch. Literally will trigger allergy style reactions(eyes and sinus). I like clubman for the first 3-4 hours and then I can't wait to wash it off. I favor aftershaves that have the good sense (scents) to leave by mid day.
  • This is my 4th year although I went out on the first year for soap I ended up hating so 2019 will be my hat trick.

This arrived today.

Outstanding post. The reason I'm a minimalist is I found a combination that works well on my first try.

Right now, I should be able to make it all the way through next year even without buying anything during the resupply week.

Vespasian here, #11, checking in. I was just looking at my stuff, and I'm still doing fine. One type of blade, one vintage razor, one vintage brush, one artisan lather bowl. Come January, I shall get 8 pucks of 4 different soaps, two or three aftershaves, a huge bottle of 4711, and I should be set again for at least a year. Dunno if I'll join the sabbatical again. Probably.

Hey everyone, I busted out my Hallows for this month and I've been noticing that I'm getting a little irritation from it. Nothing that lingers, but I am wondering if it is the vetiver. I love the smell, and I was not allergic to vetiver when I was younger, to the best of my recollection. And I was exposed fairly often because my parents made soap and my father loves the smell of it. Anyone else develop an allergy after "growing up"? I am considering trading the set at this point. I have the soap, aftershave and EDT. Only thing that gives me pause is that it seems to only bug me for a bit and then it goes away. Tough decisions :).

I know I'll be able to make it through next year without buying anything during resupply week. I was thinking about getting some aftershaves that I've run out of and miss but I have 3 14oz bottles of aftershave which would equate to 7-10 bottles of the more customary size 4-6 oz bottles of aftershave. (and that isn't even all of my aftershaves) I'm going to skip buying anything for at least one or two more sabbaticals after this one.

I am still in and trying to decide if I will sign up for next year to make it five in a row or just silently slide into obscurity. There is almost no chance that I will actually buy anything specifically for shaving in the next few years and the only thing that slightly intrigues me is the copper CC lather bowl but my cereal bowl I swiped from the kitchen when my ceramic CC bowl broke a few years ago seems to be working just fine and generally having less stuff appeals to me. I am packing things in anticipation of moving into a new house in a month or so and I was shocked to see how many boxes of shave stuff I have

I wonder if I can pre-sign up for being number five next year... It was dumb luck that I got #4 this year.

Ruckin.

I like the idea of allowing those who complete the Sabbatical this year to pick the same number next year. There could be a one-week advance signup period for us. During open enrollment, people could choose their numbers, too. I suggest strictly limiting the number of participants to 99. (Then relent when all the numbers are taken).
