2014 Badger & Blade Awards – Shaving Brushes Under $150

Return to the Badger & Blade Awards Announcement page.

At Badger & Blade, we’re fascinated with and inspired by exceptional quality. We expend tireless efforts to find, review and share items that stand out from the pack. The Badger & Blade Awards are designed to recognize products of special significance – those which rise above the rest. The finest products are not mere inanimate objects; rather, they are works of art, tirelessly crafted by artisans and truly distinctive. In that spirit, we are proud to announce the award winner for best in class shaving brushes (under $150):

Savile Row 3124 ($131)

The 3824 won brush wars seven years ago, and not much has changed in Savile Row’s 24mm brush lineup. The only difference between Savile Row’s 24mm silvertip line are the handles. The 3124 pictured above sports the same knot specs of the winning 3824 and it’s a good thing as it is one of the best knots in the industry.

SR3Savile Row has stayed true to its roots and Charles, the designer of the Savile Row line has maintained his dedication to offering his brushes in faux ivory. You won’t find his brushes in wild colors, as Charles feels the finest shaving brushes were always made in ivory and so too should his. So then, what makes a Savile Row so special? It does everything exceptionally well and at $131, it’s reasonably priced in its class. You also know you’re getting exactly 20 grams of badger hair in your brush, one of the only brands to quantify the amount of badger hair in their shaving brushes.

With soft tips, good flexibility in the canopy of the knot, and a firm foundation, it offers an experience very similar to that of a Plisson High Mountain White from the canopy up, but with a firmer foundation, and a third the cost. This is truly the holy grail, for the pragmatist shaver looking for the ultimate luxury shaving brush.
