Jean over at www.mytimebathandbody.com has done it again with her affordable shaving cream/soap line. I call it a cream/soap because it doesn't seem to fit very clearly into one or the other. All of her shaving products are Tallow based and also have quite a bit of aloe vera in it, so the end result is a very rich lather producing and moisturizing product that is perfect for dry skin. She has a wide variety of scents and even allows you to place custom mixes of what she has and is very willing to help you figure out just what mix you need.

General review aside, her sandalwood scent is a real treat for anyone that digs sandalwood scents. Her take on it reminds me of a very rich oatmeal smell that is not too overpowering or sweet, but very pleasing. I would say that its on par with her other shaving soap scents, but where the sandalwood shines through is in the after scent. Once you are done shaving, not only does your skin feel fresh and rejuvenated, but it smells like wonderful sandalwood for at least half of the rest of the day without even having to use an aftershave splash.

So, I bought a tub of Taylor's Almond scented cream. It is a little hard, not soft and smooth. But not so hard that I cannot get any out of the tub. I also cannot get a very long lasting lather out of it. I do have some pretty hard water where I live but I can get some good lather from other creams, like Speick. At first I thought it was just the hard water here but I got a great lather the other day from my Speick and had the best shave I have had in a while.

So, any suggestions? Is this tub wasted or is there anything I can do to revivie it? :confused1

I've really been enjoying this soap. First off, it's a great value (in the UK at least), as a 100 gram puck can be procured for about 10 pounds (less than $20) in a terracotta bowl with a lid. I've seen this advertised as a cream and a soap. It appears that it began its life as a cream, as it looks like it has been piped into the bowl. I consider this a soap, however, because mine is rock hard and it behaves like a soap. This is a non-tallow soap, but I'm not put off by that. I'm not a member of the "a good soap must contain tallow" camp.

This seems to be of comparable quality to many of the big name soaps, and it performs similarly to those I own that are highly regarded on B&B (Trumpers, Harris, Provence Sante, etc.). I'm getting great shaves with this soap, and I have no trouble creating a rich, cushioning, slick lather.

I Coloniali shaving soap is particularly interesting because of its unique smoky mango fragrance, and it has a touch of menthol that gives a slight cooling effect during the shave. I don't typically care for menthol, but I actually find the small amount in this soap quite nice. I suppose I just don't like menthol in large doses. I'm prone to dry skin, and while this isn't the most moisturizing soap I have, it certainly isn't drying, even if I don't use an aftershave balm. This is probably one of my favorite soaps of late, and I've been reaching for it over my Irisch Moos and La Toja.

I heartily recommend this one.

I picked up a 1953 (40's style) Superspeed from the B/S/T forums. I really like this razor. It shaves very well, and the weight seems just right.

Price: These razors can generally be picked up for $10-$30 from forums, or Ebay. You can also find one at a lot of antique shops for even less than this.
Quality: This is truly a quality razor.
User Friendliness: This razor is easy to use. Simply twist to open to change blades (more on that in a bit). There's really nothing else to learn about it to use it.
Grip: I have fairly average size hands. This razor is the perfect size for me. The handle is not too short; it has ample room to hold it. I don't feel cramped at all. It has enough grip on it, so it doesn't slip when your hand is slightly wet.
Ease of Blade Replacement: I really like the twist-to-open (TTO) action to change blades on the Superspeed. Simply turn the knob at the bottom of the handle, and the head opens. The blade simply drops in, and you tighten it using the TTO. You don't have to hold the head and screw it in, like with the Tech and other razors.
Aggressiveness: I have only tried a couple razors, so I can't really speak comparatively as to the aggressiveness of this razor. However, I feel it is a little bit more aggressive than the Tech I have, which is a good thing. I quite consistently get a DFS or BBS shave with this razor, so I think it is plenty aggressive enough, at least for now.
Balance: I really like the balance of this razor. It seems to have the perfect weight and balance. This helps out with the aggressiveness of the shave. I do not feel I have to use any pressure (which is a good thing), as the razor has enough weight to cut the hairs.

Hi there new DE user,

You're gonna see lots of vintage(old)razors for sale here, and maybe this post will help in some way. The idea is of course to purchase something at a fair price. That's pretty straightforward.....buying a razor (as described) at a reasonable price. Since these old things aren't being made anymore, the market for vintage razors is set by a number of factors. Things like how rare, or how they are known to shave, or the razor's condition, etc.

Once you decide on the razor you'd like, do some research instead of just buying one that looks real purty on the spur of the moment. Yep, buying a razor can be a little tricky if you're new and have NO reference point to what the going rate for items are. To put this in a gentlemanly way......some deals are better than others.

You may be looking in the forum and see a great looking razor being sold.........exactly the model you want! Before pulling the trigger though, do some research in advance on that type and see what similar ones have sold for. Once you have that knowledge, you can make an informed decision on the price. Then, when that item comes up for sale(and they always do), you can either jump on it, or blow it off as overpriced. Yes, some items are overpriced, and it's better to know that before buying one of those things.

Other members may comment on how reasonable the item being sold is, but it's often best to make up your own mind with the information you have collected. Eveyone has an opinion here, including me.

I've seen some poor pricing on some items recently, and other veteran members are aware of them as well I'm sure. I rarely ever comment in those overpriced BST posts, but sometimes it's very tempting to warn a new member about these. I guess that's why I posted this....sort of a mild buyers beware kinda thing. The good news is almost all the deals here end up with everyone being happy.

Ok, that'll do it,
