Can I get the Razor and still use my current shaving cream and stuff.Right now I dont feel like dropping so much money on brushes soaps ect when I dont know what my reaction will be.

Is this ok or not?

I want to see if the single razors will cure my shaving dilema

When I shave its all fine and dandy but when my hairs grow back THEY HURT AND THEY HURT BAD.So maybe this will cure it.
what are your .2 cents

Just by changing to a DE razor, your shaves should improve. Should because of only using one blade and paying attention to your technique.

Once you see how your shave will improve, you will soon be buying the rest that goes along with it. Why?

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!

if i were you, get a basic Merkur and the sampler pack of blades from letterK. then pick up a bottle of King of Shaves gel. Its the best gel/goo on the market.

Yes you can use your existing 'software' (as King of Shaves call it. Twits.) But do use water and massage the stuff IN, don't rub it ON.

Getting a blade smapler pack is a good suggestion. As is King of Shaves oil/gel once your regular Gillette/Edge/Aveno/etc. gel expires.

There are so many variables to getting a good shave, so feel free to change one at a time.

Good luck

If you do switch over to a DE, I would pick up a Surrey Boar brush it's available at nearly all major drug stores and is almost always under $4. A tube of Proraso Shaving Cream is availabe at Target and runs around $6. It's $10 total, but I think it would really help. A lot of people put down the Surrey Boar, but I actually prefer it to the Proraso Brush.

Have you seen Mantic's Videos? Here's the Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjhIy9rgWQU), I would watch all these instructional videos they are fantastic. He also mentions many low cost products.

One can see the difference when changing only single component of his 'high-end' equipment. The shaves feel really better and so does the skin.

You can get a brush and cream for under $15 dollars easy and it will get better results with a DE than would canned gels/creams. CVS and most drugstores carry Palmolive (red) shave cream which is dirt cheap but still gives an excellent shave. The other possibility for cream Tim mentioned, Proraso, will run a little but not much more expensive. Namy stores still have chead boar brushes like Surrey. Using the combination of the cheap boar brush and Proraso/Palmolive will let you try out the shave brush experience without the initial overhead. More expensive brushes are nicer though.

If it comes down to a choice of switching to a DE razor vs. using a brush & quality cream/soap, I'd say that you'll notice far more improvement by simply using a brush & quality cream/soap with your existing razor.

You should be able buy the Proraso brush along with some Proraso cream at your local Target store for a total of ~$20 (rest assured, the Proraso brush easily justifies the additional cost over the Burma Shave brush).

If it must be done on the cheap:

Surrey brush $4, CVS/Walgreens
Williams "Mug" Soap, or Surrey glycerine soap $1.25-$3, CVS/Walgreens
ceramic mug to put the cake of soap in, Free or cheap depending on if you already have one or have to buy a $2 one from Target.

If you want a brushless Cream: Palmolive.

Honestly, it's your face. If you want to use the canned goo with a DE razor there's nothing wrong with that. I think you'll find that you eventually want to try the better creams/soaps and a decent brush but if money is tight start with a DE and gradually acquire the additional supplies as money permits.

Proraso is quite affordable and pretty good to boot.

Check out Proraso shaving cream - $6 at Target
QED, Mama Bear and Saint Charles Shaving also make excellent shaving soaps which are excellent values at low prices.

Check out the Proraso Brush - $12 at Target or Surrey Boar Brush - $4 at almost any drug store. Boar brushes are a much lower cost alternative to badger.

Nivea ASB is a very nice balm. If it works for you no reason to switch.

DEs - Look for a Merkur HD, available at www.classicshaving.com, www.leesrazors.com, www.qedusa.com and others
Or look a Gilette SuperSpeed on Ebay, it will be a used razor but they are good razors and may be cheaper than a new HD. Also keep an eye on the Shaving mall, a good razor may come for sale.

Good luck:thumbup1:

Rock,

I keep thinking about your posts. I've been quite vocal about encouraging your switch to the DE, brush, real cream, etc. But I don't know if we've been thinking about it the right way. Only upgrade to these products if you can afford them. The switch would be nice, but only if you can afford to. You shouldn't put yourself out just to have a closer shave. These products are luxury items, don't cause yourself problem if you can't afford them. There is nothing wrong with doing what you've been doing.

Good luck, do what you think is best for you.

I agree with this 100%. Making the switch to a DE will actually save you money in the long run as the blades are far less expensive. As for the rest, as Tommy said, buy them if and when you can afford to do so.

Hey just checking up.Give me a few to read. But I read the what you said bout moving to DE being a luxury and I think that everything BUT the razor is the cheapest item. Most of the items are 5-10 bucks including the brush. The Razor is a whoaping 45ish and thats what I dont have.I want to learn how to shave at an early age because my shaves right now suck!

Check around in your local antique and second hand stores. You'll probably be able to find a Super Speed or other Gillette DE for a pretty reasonable price.

Brush=Boar; Surrey, Burma Shave, Proraso, etc., ......$6-15
Cream=Kiss My Face at Whole Foods or even some grocers, .....$4-6
Soap=Williams Mug soap or Colgate, .....$2-4
Razor=Vintage Gillette DE razor, ....as little as $5 at a local antiques shop
Blades=start cheap with US Personnas (or get the letterk sample), ....$1.60 (or more for the sample pack, but a great deal nonetheless)
Better shave without huge financial outlay......priceless!

So get the brush, soap or cream, etc. first, which will improve even the cartridge razors, then find a cheap Gillette vintage DE on here or Ebay, or at the local antiques shop, and you'll start to get the best shaves!!

is burma shave a brush?

so brush
cream
What do I use the soap for? I dont think the videos covered that
Razor I know what to do lol
blades I know what to do as well.!!
thanks

Also form watching the vids I think I got it down to perfection (in my head) tell me if this is a good walk thru

Put a small dap of cream on the mug get the brush stir it till Its into a good lather my face well
Then shave two passes going DOWN for my first couple of shaves to get a feel for the blade and razor.

What I want to knwo is when can I start shaving against the grain. From what I understand is after like a week or so of shaving I can start going with the grain and then against.

Now ONE small question. For my neck can I just shave down wich is basicly across the grain and then against or is with the grain a must?

thanks!!!!

ALSO IF ANYONE HAS ANY OF THIS ITEMS OR ALL THAT THEY CAN SELL ME IN A PACKAGE LET ME KNOW!

thanks

Yes, it is a boar brush you can get at Wal-Mart or other discount places.

What do I use the soap for? I dont think the videos covered that
You can use the cream OR soap (or both)...soap you just put at the bottom of a mug and swirl a wet brush over it until you begin to build lather.

Check the Shaving Mall thread on here. Someone puts up a starter kit often, usually at a reasonable price. :thumbup1:

IMHO this is the best way to become fmailiar with te whole method. I jumped right in cold turkey, but that's just me. People that have known me for decades are not surprised. IMHO one at a time is probably the best way to do this.:a54:
